NO. 1 RANKED SPARTANS BLOCK OFF HUSKIES
TWU sweeps weekend with 3-1 win

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan
– The No. 1 ranked Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team swept their weekend series with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies with a solid 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 17-25, 25-10) win Saturday night at Saskatchewan’s PAC. The Huskies had difficulty with the Spartans front line defense, as TWU finished the night with an impressive 18.5 team blocks.

“We had hints of dominance in tonight’s match,” said TWU Head Coach Ron Pike. “But we were very average in the third set; we just didn’t execute at a high enough level.”

The Huskies were looking to tie up the weekend matches 1-1 as they stepped onto the court. The Spartans came out strong and took control of the match with a solid 25-21 first set win.

In the second set Steve Rogalsky stepped up for the Spartans as the rightside hitter led his team to a 25-16 win.

The Huskies came back in the third set. They hit at 40% to take the third game 25-17.

Any hopes that Saskatchewan had of climbing back in the match were quickly dashed as TWU closed out the night with an impressive 25-10 win.

Rogalsky led all players with 14 kills, while Brian Loden led the Huskies with 10 kills.

The Spartans return home for a pair of exhibition matches against the University of Southern California Trojans (NCAA Div. I). On Friday they will play at M.E.I. in Abbotsford, B.C., before returning to TWU for a matinee match at 2 p.m.

Match Notes: TWU’s 18.5 team blocks was the second most in school history for a four set match. The Spartans had 21.5 blocks in a 3-1 win over York University at the 2005 CIS National Championship...TWU’s record for blocks in a match is 25, which was set against UBC on Oct. 23, 1999...
