SPARTANS SWEEP TOP RANKED GOLDEN BEARS
-Battling injuries TWU rallies over #1 Alberta

EDMONTON
- The #3 ranked Trinity Western University Spartan volleyball team picked up where they left off as they defeated the #1 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears in straight sets (26-24, 25-22 and 25-20) Friday night in the U of A's Main Gym.

“We played okay, we didn’t play great. We are still figuring things out and we can be a little sharper, but it is definitely a good win for us.” said TWU Head Coach Ron Pike. “We are still adjusting to our new line up and we are really trying to push for the playoff run.”

The last time the two teams met in a meaningful match-up it was the 2005-06 CIS Championship final where the Spartans upset the heavily favoured Golden Bears for National gold after Terry Danyluk's Alberta team went 19-1 in regular season and 34-2 overall.  Alberta and Trinity Western have met in the last two CIS finals, with each team winning one gold medal.  In the previous three seasons, the Spartans have won CIS bronze (2004), silver (2005) and gold (2006) at the National level, while the Bears, who have played in the last five CIS championship games, have claimed two golds and three silvers.

Alberta and Trinity Western travelled on a tour to the British Columbia’s Okanagan in September of this season for a pair of pre-season games that saw the teams split, the Spartans winning in five on the first night and Alberta winning in four the next night.

Coming into Friday night's contest the Golden Bears, who lost five of seven starters from last season's silver place finish, were the class of the CIS with a perfect 16-0 record and a National #1 ranking that they have held for a majority of the season. While the Spartans have struggled with injuries, which has seen them drop three matches in the second half, including two straight to the UBC Thunderbirds last weekend.

But it was the Spartans who played the better ball, capitalizing on Alberta's struggles at the service line and at the net both offensively and defensively.

The first set was almost all Trinity Western right from the get go as they established a strong attacking game, getting several kills through or around the Alberta block.  After the Spartans led at both technical time-outs, Alberta stormed back on the heels of two Thomas Jarmoc aces to close the scoring gap to within two points at 22-20 Trinity.  The two rivals traded points back and forth with Alberta inching closer and eventually forcing extra points. Steve Rogalsky and the Spartan attack proved to be too much as TWU pulled away to win 26-24.

Rogalsky finished with seven kills in the first set, while Jarmoc put down four kills and two service aces.  Alberta managed three aces, but also four service errors and a 15% team attack rating.

The second set saw Alberta's play at the net improve, jumping to a 32% attack efficiency rating, but their struggles at the service line continued to haunt them, committing a whopping nine errors at the back-line, giving them 13 errors and the Spartans 13 points through two sets.

Alberta twice clawed back from a six point deficit (10-6 and 20-14) to draw within two points in the third set but could not maintain their momentum as game-breaking service errors and hitting errors continued to plague the home-side, giving the Spartans the straight sets win.

Jarmoc finished as the Bears top point man, putting down 10 kills, while Joel Schmuland finished with nine and Adam Kaminski scored seven kills on 11 attempts.  As a team the Bears committed 20 attack errors and 18 service errors for a team 27% attack rating.

Rogalsky scored 13 kills to lead TWU, while the Spartans clipped along with a 31% attack rating and six aces.

Alberta will look to rebound from their first regular season loss tomorrow night, 8:00 p.m. in the Main Gym against the Spartans.

Match Notes: The Spartans currently are tied for third place with the UBC Thunderbirds with UBC holding the tie breaker, which would have TWU hosting Manitoba in the first round of the Canada West playoffs. If TWU wins Saturday or loses by no more than 3-2 then the Spartans would move into third spot and host the University of Saskatchewan.
