SPARTANS SWEEP HUSKIES ON OPENING NIGHT OF PLAYOFFS
-TWU gets off to slow start but pulls it together at the end

LANGLEY, British Columbia
- It was not a pretty start for the Trinity Western University Spartans in their opening match of the Canada West Quarterfinal match-up against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. But ultimately the only thing that matters is that, despite their slow start, the Spartans prevailed 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-20) over the visiting Huskies to take a 1-0 series lead and can close the series out and advance to the Canada West Final Four with a victory on Friday night and a chance to defend their National Title with an automatic berth to the National Championships in Hamilton, Ontario.

I don’t think we were aggressive enough serving the ball and we missed serves early on from a couple of our key guys and it kind of sets us back a bit and we couldn’t really get in our groove right away,” commented TWU Head Coach Ron Pike on his team’s slow start.

The opening frame looked to be a combination of playoff nerves and the two teams feeling each other out as they went back and forth in the early stages of the first by alternating kills and errors. Each team took turns taking the lead, but it was the visitors who took a 16-14 advantage into the second break. TWU would come back to tie it at 20-20, but neither team could take control as each team committed two errors a piece in the final stages of the game. It was the Spartans who hung on though to win the first set 25-22 off a kill from Jeff Stel (Langley, B.C.). TWU finished with six errors (two attack, four service), while Saskatchewan tallied 12 (six attack, six service) in a sloppy first frame.

The image “http://www.twu.ca/athletics/images/mens-volleyball/mv-2006-07/banner/cw-stel-sask1.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. The second set began very similar to the first with the Spartans taking an 8-7 lead at the first time-out. However, out the first break, Saskatchewan was forced into attack errors due to TWU’s powerful presence at the net and TWU began to take control of the game. Up 22-15 late in the game, the Spartans were poised to take the second. Saskatchewan would go on to get a few points back, but TWU went on to win the game, 25-18, fittingly, off an attack error by the visitors. Steve Rogalsky (Maple Ridge, B.C.) had a strong set for the Spartans as he went five for seven on the attack, while Philip Blatz (Meadow Lake, Sask.) exploded for seven kills on 10 attempts and was one of the main reasons that his team had a chance in the game.

In the third game, with the Huskies back on their heels, the Spartans jumped out to a commanding 12-4 lead. But, led by Blatz, Saskatchewan went on an 8-4 run to cut the lead to four with TWU taking a 16-12 lead into the second break. The two teams actually went point for point coming out of the second break, but the Huskies were unable to overcome their poor start to the set as the Spartans finished them off with a balanced attack during the final stages of the game to win it, 25-20 and take a crucial 1-0 series lead.

The image “http://www.twu.ca/athletics/images/mens-volleyball/mv-2006-07/banner/cw-howey-sask1.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.“First match is always big – you want to win that match because it sets the tone for the series. It also puts pressure on the opponent,” emphasized Coach Pike.

Looking ahead to the next match, “we will probably adjust a few things for tomorrow. [Philip Blatz] did a really good job on us tonight - he was by far [Saskatchewan’s] best player and we are going to have to take a look a little more closely at him to see what he’s doing. For us, it’s pretty much doing the same stuff we just need to get off to a better start and put a bit more pressure on them when we are trying to score,” Pike added.

TWU will look to take the series on Friday night when they face Saskatchewan again in match two of their best of three series. Match time is set for 8 p.m.

Steve Rogalsky finished with an impressive 62.5% attack efficiency as he was tied for the match high in kills with 17 on 24 attempts – he also added five digs and two service aces. Seth Schalk (Red Deer, Alta.) was tied for the match high with six digs to go with his four kills and two assists, while Jeff Stel recorded six kills and three digs.

The image “http://www.twu.ca/athletics/images/mens-volleyball/mv-2006-07/banner/cw-mark-l-sask1.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. For the Huskies, Philip Blatz went 17 for 27 on the attack for an efficiency of 48.1%. Gavin Little (Fairview, Alta.) chipped in nine kills, while third year, leftside Brian Loden (Weyburn, Sask.) tallied four kills and the shared match high, six digs.

Match Notes: Both teams committed 10 service errors each...TWU tallied six service aces and Saskatchewan finished with five...The Spartans recorded a 50% efficiency rating (40 for 68 with six errors) compared to the Huskies 22.7% (36 for 75 with 19 errors)...Only two players reached double figures in kills in the three set match – Rogalsky and Blatz...the series is being broadcasted live over the internet on TWU’s Spartan Web Radio – www.spartanwebradio.ca...
