SPARTANS OPEN WITH BATTLE AGAINST 'BEARS

PENTICTON, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's volleyball team opened the 2008 pre-season with an epic 3-2 victory over the University of Alberta Golden Bears Thursday night at Princes Margaret Secondary in Penticton, B.C.

"I couldn't be happier with the way we started," said TWU head coach Ben Josephson. "We aren't really ready to play a match yet, but it is very encouraging to get the win and it is nice to see the guys get rewarded for the dedication and perseverance that they have had in their training."

It was a back and forth night for both teams as the Spartans took sets one and three (26-24, 25-21), with the Golden Bears taking sets two and four (25-20, 25-22) to set up the fifth set battle.

TWU came out strong and led 8-6 at the break, then the Bears clawed their way back to take a 17-16 lead. But a block beating pipe ball kill by Paul Lindemulder (2nd year, leftside, Calgary) tied the match up at 17-17 and sparked TWU to three straight points and a 19-17 fifth set victory.

"Our defense was the best part of the game. We dug the ball fantastically and we controlled the ball and controlled our side of the net as much as possible," added Josephson. "We did a good job of playing our team game, which was ultimately the difference for us tonight."

The two teams will play again tomorrow night at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, B.C. Match time is at 8 p.m. The matches are part of the Spartans-Golden Bears annual pre-season tour through the Okanagan.
