SPARTANS OPEN TOUR WITH LOSS

HAMILTON - The Trinity Western University men's volleyball team opened their matches with McMaster University and the University of Guelph with a loss to McMaster Thursday night in Hamilton. After batting in the first set the Spartan succumbed to the Marauders in straight sets 31-29, 25-21 and 25-21.

"We struggled serving and passing tonight, which really hampered our ability to side-out," said TWU head coach Ben Josephson. "And they are a big blocking team so that created some problems for us too. But we will regroup and get back at it again tomorrow."

The first set was a great seesaw battle. While the second and third sets were close through until the second timeout. Then a few TWU mistakes combined with McMaster making plays resulted in the Marauders getting a comfortable lead to close out the sets.

Josephson commented that Josh Doornenbal (3rd year, Edmonton) was the best player for the Spartans. "Josh was fantastic blocking and hitting for us from his middle position."

The two teams will match up again tomorrow night in Hamilton. The match time is set for 8 p.m. The last time the two teams met was in the 2007 CIS Championship quarter finals when TWU took the match 3-2.
