FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WOLFPACK OVER SPARTANS IN FOUR IN PRESEASON MATCH

KAMLOOPS, British Columbia
–Playing before over a thousand fans at the Tournament Capital Center on Friday night the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack downed the Trinity Western Spartans 3-1.  The scores were 23-25,26-24,25-18,25-22.

“This was by far our best match,” stated fourth year libero Kyle Donen (White Rock, BC).  “We haven’t played a full game yet and by doing it, we came up with a win against a team we weren’t suppost to beat.”   Donen had nine digs in the contest.

“I thought the blocking and defence on both teams were pretty good, “explained Trinity coach Ben Josephson.  “I thought there were some long rallies.  Unfortunately at this point of the season, those rallies were ended by attack errors. It would be nice to see those rallies ended by kills.”

After losing the first set, TRU came out and went on a four point run being down 4-2 in the second set.  Three of those points coming from first year outside hitter Kevin Tillie (Cagnes Sur Mer, France).  Tillie wound up with 18 kills on 34 attempts.  He was named the TRU Bookstore “Leader of the Pack” player of the match.

TRU was led again by Junior National team co-captain Gord Perrin (3rd year, outside hitter, Creston, BC).  He had 24 kills on 61 attempts. He also had 19 digs.  First year setter Colin Carson (Prince George, BC) had 54 assists.

Trinity was led by Steven Marshall  (2nd year, left side, Abbotsford, B.C.) with 12 kills in 46 attempts.  He also had two solo blocks. Rudy Verhoeff (3rd year, outside hitter, Calgary) and Josh Doornenbal (4 th year, middle, Edmonton) had 10 kills.   Ben Ball (3rd year, setter, Abbotsford, B.C.) had 42 assists. Marc Howatson (3rd year, left side, Victoria) contributed a team high 11 digs.

Both teams now prepare for their season openers.  While Trinity Western hosts UBC, the WolfPack as they gear up for the start of their 2009-10 Canada West regular season next weekend (Oct 31-Nov 1) in Edmonton against the two time defending national champion Alberta Golden Bears.

SETS AND BUMPS:  The crowd was especially large due to the fact the WolfPack are hosting their Junior Howler Tournament. There are over 30 junior boys and girls squads from throughout Alberta and BC involved in the event, which wraps up on Saturday.

The impact of selling CIS Volleyball wasn’t lost on Spartans coach Josephson.  “We have an exciting sport and anything we can do to promote it is great. I remember as a young player going to the Dino Cup in Calgary.  It made me want to become a volleyball player.  Last week, I got to coach in it.  I have to thank Pat (WolfPack head coach Hennelly) for letting us be a part of this.  I hope we can do something similar in our area in the future.”
