(24-26, 25-13, 27-25, 25-23)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NO. 4 BEARS TAKE TWO FROM NO. 6 SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– The fourth ranked University of Alberta defeated No. 6 Trinity Western University 3-1 Saturday night to sweep the two match weekend series with the Spartans.

The Golden Bears took the match 24-26, 25-13, 27-25, and 25-23 to improve to 9-3, while the loss drops the Spartans to 6-4.

The first set was tight throughout. TWU led 8-7 at the first break and 16-15 at the second break. When the teams were tied at 20-20 the Spartans’ middles Josh Doornenball of Edmonton and Rudy Verhoeff of Calgary took over. The two combined for three blocks and a kill as TWU took first set 26-24.

The Golden Bears came out flying in the second set and dominated from start to finish. They led 8-5 and 16-10 on their way to a solid 25-13 win.

The third set was a copy of the first set. The Spartans led 8-7 and 16-15 at the two breaks. The two teams were tight from there on and remained tied up 23-23. TWU went up 24-23, but were unable to get the final set point, as Alberta took four of the next five points to take the set 27-25.

The fourth set was tight again. Alberta led 8-6 and 16-14 at the two breaks. The Golden Bears and Spartans would eventually be tied at 21-21. TWU took a 23-22 lead, but like the previous set Alberta finished strong and took the final set 25-23.

Next up for the Spartans are the University of Regina Cougars. Match times on Fri. Jan. 15 and Sat. Jan. 16 at the Langley Events Centre are at 8 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.

The match was broadcast live on SpartanTV at gospartans.ca.
