MENS VOLLEYBALL (CANADA WEST)
FRIDAY, JANUARY 15, 2010
TWU SPARTANS (3) VS THE UNIVERSITY OF REGINA COUGARS (0)
(25-16, 25-19, 25-17)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NO. 5 SPARTANS KEEP UNRANKED COUGARS WINLESS

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– The fifth ranked Trinity Western University men’s volleyball used a strong middle attack to sweep past the University of Regina Cougars 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-17) Friday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.

“We had a size advantage, but that only matters if you are at the net and in system. We were working really hard at getting quality first touches on the ball both in defence and reception and let Ben Ball have a chance to use our weapons and take advantage of our size,” commented TWU head coach Ben Josephson. “We were trying to speed up our offence, which I thought was pretty good we just had a lot of unforced errors attacking the ball, but as far as our offensive structure it looked pretty good. We have gotten a little sluggish the last few weeks so we were pushing the pace.”

Spartans’ middles Josh Doornenbal of Edmonton and Rudy Verhoeff of Calgary controlled the net attack and combined for 18 of TWU’s 45 kills on the night. Verhoeff finished the night with 10 kills and three blocks, while Doornenbal finished with eight kills and five blocks. Setter Ben Ball of Abbotsford, B.C. led the Spartan attack with 34 set assists. The Cougars bright spot was from rightside Matthew Brooks of Whitby, Ont. who led Regina with 10 kills and nine digs.

The win moves the third place Spartans to 7-4, while the loss keeps the Cougars winless at 0-11.

“There still a Canada West team and they can make some good plays and systems wise and structure they are a very sound team, they are just lacking some size and athleticism to match up with some of the better teams. But if you make some unforced errors they are good enough to catch you. So you have to stay disciplined and let your athleticism be the difference,” added Josephson.

The two teams will match up again tomorrow night at the LEC. Scheduled start time is for 7 p.m. PST.

Tonight’s match was streamed live on SpartanTV at gospartans.ca.

Match Notes: TWU had the hitting edge on Regina with 45 kills to the Cougars 23…the Spartans had the edge in blocks 7.5 to 3.5…TWU also had 28 digs to the Cougars 26 digs…
