MENS VOLLEYBALL (CANADA WEST)
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2010
TWU SPARTANS (3) VS THE UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (0)
(28-26, 25-17, 26-24)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTAN HITTERS PUSH BASK HUSKIES IN SWEEP

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– Trinity Western University setter Ben Ball of Abbotsford, B.C. led a balanced Spartan attack as No. 8 TWU swept the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The victory improves the Spartans to 10-6, while the loss drops the Huskies to 6-10.

“Benny had one of his best setting nights. He was brilliant tonight and it was one of the more heady matches that he has set, maybe in his career. He used all of the different layers of our offence and I’m really pleased to see him be that great,” commented TWU head coach Ben Josephson. “We thought we had an advantage in the middle early, the passing gave us a chance to run them,  we got some kills, they were hopping on it and then we were able to go wide and spread there blockers out again. Benny was cycling through his options in a way that they couldn’t quite get a handle on what he was doing and just when they figured it out he would change and run something different.”

Ball, who finished with 39 set assists, was impressive as he distributed the ball effectively to all of the Spartan attackers. Leading the attack for TWU were leftside Steven Marshall of Abbotsford, B.C. who finished with 18 kills, leftside Marc Howatson of Victoria who finished with 10 kills, middle Josh Doornenbal of Edmonton who finished with eight kills and middle Rudy Verhoeff of Calgary who finished with six kills (6-0-8). While in the loss the Huskies were led by leftside Alwyn Piche of La Loche, Sask. with 17 kills and right side Matt Busse of Outlook, Sask. with eight kills. The Spartans finished the match hitting at 35.4 percent, while the Huskies finished at 23 percent.

“The middles are the strength of our team. They are just rocks,” added Josephson. “Tonight was one of the prettier matches that we have played.”

The opening set was a battle back and forth for the entire set. TWU led by one point, 8-7, at the first time out, while Saskatchewan led by one point, 16-15 at the second break. The two teams played side-out ball to 24-24. The Huskies had the first shot at set point, but Busse’s serve went into the net. They had another at 26-25, but Piche’s serve was also in the net. The Spartans Verhoeff hit the next serve on the outside of the Huskies back line to give TWU the 27-26 lead. After a Saskatchewan timeout the Spartans Doornenball found the floor to give the Spartans the opening set 28-26. TWU finished the set hitting 34.4 percent, while Saskatchewan hit at 38.5 percent.

The second set had a similar start to the first set, with TWU leading 8-6 at the first break. But in the middle of the set the serving of Spartans Verhoeff, with five straight serves, and the attacking of Marshall allowed TWU to take a 16-10 lead at the second break.  TWU used the gap to cruise to the 25-17 second set win and a 2-0 sets lead. The Spartans attack was impressive in the second set at TWU finished at 51.6 percent, while the Huskies fell to 12.9 percent.

The third set was even to the first break with TWU leading 8-7. Then the Spartans looked like they were taking control of the set when they jumped out to a 12-9 lead after a kill by left side Paul LIndemulder of Calgary. But the Huskies rallied and took advantage of TWU attacking errors to tie the set at 12-12. The Spartans went up by two points, 16-14, at the second break, which they extended to 19-15 after a kill by Marshall. Once again Saskatchewan came back with four straight points to tie the set at 19-19. The teams exchanged points to 24-24. Then TWU got to match point when Saskatchewan setter Cole Hintz of Yorkton, Sask. sent his serve long over the end line. With Marshall serving for set point the Huskies went to Piche to tie the set. Piche’s cross court attack was met by the block of Doornenbal and Howatson as TWU stuffed the attempt to take the final set 26-24. TWU finished the third set hitting at 21.2 percent, while Saskatchewan finished at 13.3 percent.

The Spartans are now on the road to Kamloops next weekend when they will take on the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack on Fri. Feb. 12 and Sat. Feb. 13, while Saskatchewan will now travel to Manitoba to close out their Canada West season with hopes of gaining the final play-off spot.

Match Notes: Next weekend’s matches will determine six of the final seven play-off positions. The Spartans could finish as high as second in Canada West or as low as sixth…
