MEN’S VOLLEYBALL (QUEEN’S TOURNAMENT)
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2010
TWU SPARTANS (3) AT THE QUEEN’S GOLDEN GAELS (2)
(22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 15-10)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS RALLY IN FIVE OVER GAELS

KINGSTON, Ontario
– After traveling on the “red-eye” to Ontario the Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team need to rally to defeat Queen’s University in five sets in the second game of the 24th Annual Queen’s Men’s Volleyball Invitational on Friday night at the Athletics and Recreation Centre at the Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont.

“It was a struggle and a real grind after traveling all night. The guys were a little sluggish to start, but by the end of the match we were playing pretty good volleyball. It just took us a while to find our rhythm,” commented TWU head coach Ben Josephson. “I’m really proud of the win. Our guys performed very admirably with a number of things going against us. Now we just need to clean up our level of play as we continue our tour through eastern Canada.”

Rudy Verhoeff, with 13 kills, paced the Spartans to the five set 22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 15-10 victory over the host Queen’s Gaels.

After falling behind two sets to one, the Spartans won the final two sets to win the rematch of last year’s CIS Championship Quarter-final.

Verhoeff was joined in the double-digits kills category by Daniel Jansen Van Doorn who finished the game with 10.

The Gaels had three players finish with 10 or more kills, led by Joren Zeeman’s match-high 17 kills. Bryan Fautley finished the game with 15 kills and seven digs while Michael Amoroso had 10 kills.

Both teams will be back on the floor Saturday night with Trinity Western facing off against the Western Mustangs at 6 p.m. while Queen’s battles the Brandon Bobcats at 8 p.m. Both games will be held at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.
