SPARTANS DOMINANT IN SWEEP OF WESMEN

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
The No. 3 ranked Trinity Western Spartans used a balanced attack and a dominant hitting performance to knock off the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-20) Friday night at the Langley Events Centre.

The game started with a back-and-forth feel to it in the opening frame but after a Mikiah Schalk kill tied the game 10-10, the Spartans took over, outscoring the Wesmen 15-5 the rest of the set, and rolling that momentum into a convincing three-set sweep.

“We were able to execute a lot of things we’ve been talking about,” said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. “We’ve been working on system stuff lately and we were able to execute on good block systems, good defensive systems and control was good. We forced them to make perfect shots and for the first couple sets they weren’t making them as good. They picked it up so it was a closer third set, but I thought our system execution was the difference tonight.”

The win improves the Spartans record to 7-2 on the season while the loss drops Winnipeg’s record to 1-7.

After what turned into a dominant first set final score, one in which TWU hit 40.0 per cent compared to 4.8 per cent for Winnipeg, the Spartans continued to motor along in the second set.

Led early by Rudy Verhoeff, who had four kills before the first technical timeout, and TWU quickly opened a 10-4 lead and cruised to another 10-point victory.

In the third set, the Wesmen made it a much tighter game as they battled and scrapped their way to a 16-15 lead at the break, a set in which neither team was able to generate anything more than a two-point run.

Led by Marc Ross, who would finish the set with three kills, Winnipeg improved its hitting percentage – finishing at 30.9 per cent for the set, compared to -21.9 per cent in the second set – and had the Spartans scrambling a bit.

But after the technical timeout, freshman Nick Del Bianco had a swift kill, followed shortly thereafter by a pair of kills from Josh Doornenbal, and the Spartans turned the score from a one-point deficit to a 20-17 lead. With a three-point advantage, TWU seemed to take mental control of the match as they won out with a 5-3 run to wrap up the evening.

“I thought our middle players, Lucas (Van Berkel) and Josh (Doornenbal) were fantastic,” Josephson said. “We’ve been working a lot of middle attack this week and it was a point of improvement from last weekend.”

The Spartans had five different players with six kills (Mikiah Schalk, Del Bianco, Verhoeff, Van Berkel and Doornenbal)  while Branden Schmidt had three. Trinity Western’s Ben Ball finished with 31 assists while Van Berkel led TWU with three blocks.

For Winnipeg, Tom Douglas-Powell led his team with seven kills and five digs. Dan Lother had 21 assists.

The teams will meet in a rematch Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

Match Notes: Trinity Western finished with an attacking percentage of 38.1 per cent compared to Winnipeg’s 2.5 per cent…It was the Spartans highest hitting percentage since opening night against UBC when they hit 45.7 per cent.
