SPARTANS DOMINANT IN STRAIGHT SETS WIN

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
The No. 3 ranked Trinity Western Spartans were just dominant Saturday night in winning their second in a row over Winnipeg 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-23) at the Langley Events Centre.

The Spartans, using much of their bench and a variety players in different positions, busted out early with a strong start, hitting 50.0 per cent in the first set, and rocked and rolled their way to an efficient three-set victory.

“I thought our systems execution was pretty good, which was pretty similar to last night,” said TWU coach Ben Josephson. “I thought our defence was a bit better and we had a lot of good slowdowns at the net. They challenged our hands a little more so we were able to get a few more stuff blocks statistically. Serving was solid. We had some interesting decisions on some of our swings that we’d like to take another look at on tape, but overall it was a pretty solid effort.”

The win – one that saw TWU libero John Wiebe get his first start as a Spartan and rack up a Spartans three-set record 19 digs, which is only five shy of the overall school record held by Seth Schalk and Jarrod Offereins – improves TWU’s Canada West record to 8-2 on the year while Winnipeg's record falls to 1-8.

“We had the opportunity to use a lot of different personnel, which gets more buy-in from them when they’re not on the floor,” Josephson said. “It gives us as coaches a chance to evaluate what we’re seeing on tape and kind of move forward from there.

“When you have lots of depth, you want to make sure you’re using it whenever you can. John [Wiebe] was fantastic. I thought our block did a great job of funneling to him and he was great. Jarrod [Offereins] did a great job swinging. It was fun to watch Branden [Schmidt] play middle and right and Nick [Del Bianco] got another full match so it was good to see the young guys get a chance to contribute.”

After a straight sets win Friday night, Trinity Western picked up where they left off, storming out to a 10-3 lead in the opening set Saturday and led by at least five points the rest of the way. The Spartans Rudy Verhoeff had a five-kill set to lead TWU and five other players contributed at least one kill. Winnipeg had four players get two kills each.

And when the game moved to the second set, nothing really changed. The Spartans were the better squad, outhitting Winnipeg 29.6 per cent to 3.1 per cent and sailing to an 11-point win.

With Wiebe in the libero position from the start, the Spartans usual libero Jarrod Offereins – playing in a hitting position – had three kills in the second set to help lead a difficult-to-defend Spartans attack.

Winnipeg’s Devin Schmidt led the Wesmen with four kills in the second frame.

After falling behind 2-0 in less than dramatic fashion, the Wesmen did well in the third and final set to keep the game tight, but ultimately the Spartans were too much too often as TWU scraped out a 25-23 final set win.

In typical Spartans fashion this year, the blocking game was largely to their advantage, out-blocking Winnipeg 10-1. Canada West leading blocker Lucas Van Berkel once again led the team, and the game, with 5 blocks.

Trinity Western’s Verhoeff finished the game with a team-leading eight kills and setter Ben Ball had 35 assists.

Winnipeg’s Ty Loewen led the team with nine kills while Marc Ross had eight and Devin Schmidt had seven. Nathaniel Therrien had a team-high 11 digs and setter Dan Lother had 27 assists.

Trinity Western’s next Canada West action is not until Jan. 21 when they host Calgary at 8:00 p.m. The Spartans will host a tournament Jan. 2-4 and play in the Thompson Rivers tournament Jan. 6-8.

Winnipeg’s next game sees the Wesmen visit Manitoba Dec. 3 at 8:00 p.m.

Match Notes: The Spartans finished with 36.6 per cent hitting compared to 17.0 per cent from Winnipeg…Offereins finished with five kills and was 33.3 per cent attacking.
