MEN’S VOLLEYBALL (CANADA WEST)
FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 2011
NO. 1 TWU SPARTANS (3) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (0)
(25-14, 25-23, 25-19)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NO. 4 SPARTANS TAKE HUSKIES IN THREE

SASKATOON
– Led by Rudy Verhoeff with 13 kills and four blocks the No. 4 Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 Friday night in Canada West men’s volleyball at the UofS in Saskatoon.

The 25-14, 25-23, 25-19 win moves the Spartans to 9-4, while the loss drops the Huskies to 1-12.

“The guys played really good in the first set and our defence was spectacular and our attack efficiency was good. In the second set they cleaned up their mistakes and made us battle hard. In the third we kept battling to get the match,” commented TWU head coach Ben Josephson. “It’s a good win, but tomorrow is going to be a tough match.”

In addition to Verhoeff the Spartans were led by Josh Doornenbal with seven kills, Marc Howatson with four kills and seven digs and Lucas Van Berkel with six kills, five digs and three blocks.

The Huskies top performers were Ben Bourgeois with seven kills and Jeffrey Grant with seven kills and five digs.

Ben Ball led TWU with 33 set assists, while Adam McTavish led Saskatchewan with 27 assists.

In the opening set the two teams matched each other early on with the Spartans holding the slim 8-6 lead at the first break. But between the two technical breaks the Spartans were able to go on an eight to two run to lead 16-8 at the second break. From there the Spartans cruised to the 25-14 first set victory. TWU was solid offensively hitting for 38.5 percent (12-2-26), while holding the Huskies to 5.6 percent (10-8-36).

The Huskies found their game in the second set. From the opening point Saskatchewan matched TWU. The Spartans led 8-7 at the first break. But in a reverse of the first set the Huskies were able to use an eight to six run and after a kill by Adam Wendt led the Spartans 16-13 at the break. TWU battled back and tied the set at 18-18 after a kill by Verhoeff. The two teams battled for the next 10 points and remained even at 23-23. From there the Spartans got the two points they needed on back-to-back kills by Josh Doornenbal and Marc Howatson to give TWU the second set 25-23.

In the third set the Huskies opened up with the early lead, 8-7, at the first break. But the middle of the set belonged to the Spartans as TWU jumped out to the 16-12 lead at the second break. The Huskies battled back to trail by one point, 17-16, after a kill by Ben Bourgeouis. But the visitors from Langley had too much firepower down the stretch. The serving of Lucas Van Berkel and Nick Del Bianco sparked TWU on an eight to three run to take the final set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

The two teams will match up again tomorrow night in Saskatoon. Match time at the PAC is set for 8 p.m. CST.

Match Notes: TWU had the edge in digs, 36-34, blocks 9.5 to six and aces five to one…
