SPARTANS KNOCK OFF T-BIRDS IN FOUR-SETTER

SURREY, British Columbia – Playing in its first game back since coming home from a goodwill trip to China, the Trinity Western men’s volleyball team earned a 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23) win over UBC Thursday at Fleetwood Park Secondary.

The contest marked a match-up between a pair of Fleetwood Park graduates who are now in their fifth years of university ball, as TWU’s Nick Del Bianco (Surrey, B.C.) and UBC’s Ben Chow got a chance to play in their old gym one last time.

Del Bianco got the best of Chow as the Spartans picked up their fourth win of the preseason and, including their two win against university sides in China, are now 4-1 in their exhibition schedule.

“It was a really good match for this time of year,” said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. “We played a really quality opponent and our guys rose to the challenge. Nick had a really good game and I thought TK (Tyler Koslowsky, Abbotsford, B.C.) was special and made some clutch digs.

“We worked on a lot of block defence this week and I thought it showed. Whenever your team implements the focus of the week into its performance, that’s always an encouraging sign as a coach. It was a good confidence builder and gives us something to build on.”

The Spartans are back on the court Friday and Saturday as they will play UBC Okanagan at the Richmond Oval Oct. 3 and again at the Langley Events Centre Oct. 4.
