SPARTANS HEAD INTO CONFERENCE PLAY WITH WIN

LANGLEY, British Columbia – In their final preseason match of 2014 the Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat 3-1 Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.

“I thought the guys adapted to the opponent well. We talk a lot about situational play and situational play verses system play. It is one thing to execute your system it is a whole other one when you play the situation of the day,” commented TWU head coach Ben Josephson. “Our opponents today were really big and blocked great and were scrambling, so all of our hard shots they did well with. So we played the situation and tried to extend rallies and change speeds and make them attack our block off balance. And then we were able to get a lot of good runs.”

The three sets that TWU took were almost identical winning 25-18 in the first and 25-17 in the third and fourth sets. The anomaly for the Spartans was the second set when the Heat forced TWU into numerous errors and were able to take the second set 25-17.

“That is what it boiled down to in the second set. There block and defence forced us into errors instead of intentional technical shots. So that was a huge lesson for us to understand in how to adapt to the situation and not just play our system.”

With tonight’s win the Spartans head into Canada West play with a record of 5-1.

Trinity Western opens up Canada West conference play next Friday-Saturday when they will host the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack and 2013-14 player of the year fourth year right side Brad Gunter.

“Thompson Rivers put it on us the last time we played,” commented Josephson on their opponent for next week’s home opener. “They are a pretty awesome team. The player of the year is on their team and he improved this summer with the national team so I know we have some prep to do.”

Match times at the Langley Events Centre are set for 8 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday. Both matches will be streamed live on Canadawest.TV.
