Thunderbirds and Spartans Take Majority of All-Stars
Alberta’s Korthuis named MVP, Victoria’s Bruce Wilson named Coach of the Year

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The University of British Columbia and Trinity Western University dominated the 2005 Canada West All-Star selections, but the two top teams were shut-out of the major Canada West awards. Alberta halfback Mark Korthuis took top honours as he was named Canada West Most Valuable Player, while the fifth place Vikes took two of three Canada West major men’s soccer awards and placed two members on the first all-star team. The Vikes head coach Bruce Wilson was named Canada West Coach of the Year, while Victoria striker Cole McFarlane the Canada West Rookie of the Year.

Korthuis is a 6’1”, fourth year Physical Education and Recreation student from Saskatoon, SK. He led the Canada West in scoring this season with seven goals and is considered one of the dominant attackers in Canada West.

McFarlane is a 5’10”, first year Humanities student from Calgary, AB. He led the Vikes in scoring this season with four goals, which ties him for third place in Canada West.

Wilson, who won the Coach of the Year award last year to go along with the 2004 CIS National Championship is a former member of the Canadian National men’s team and has been named CIS Coach of the Year on two separate occasions, 1991-92 and 1996-97.

The first place UBC Thunderbirds with seven all-stars and the second place TWU Spartans with five all-stars took 12 of the 22 all-stars spots. Each school that competed in Canada West men’s soccer had at least one member on either the first of second all-star team as selected by the coaches.

The first all-star team was comprised of Srdjan Djekanovic (UBC) in goal, fullbacks Paul Ballard (TWU), Kyle Finner (Victoria), Paul Seymour (UBC), and Adam MacDonald (Calgary). Halfbacks were Nicola Perugini (TWU), Korthuis, Will Moore (Victoria), and Justin Tse (Lethbridge).  For the second year in a row the two stricker spots went to Steve DeBlasio and Luke Sandilands both from UBC.

The second all-star team was comprised of goaltender Devon Fraser (Alberta), fullbacks Brendan Garritty (SASK), Diaz Kambere (TWU), Erik Kuhn (Alberta) and Brian Reems (UBC). Halfbacks were Nico Marcina (UBC), Carlos Cruz (Calgary), Paul Bahia (UBC) and Mark Peters (TWU). The strickers were Drew Roddy (TWU) and MacFarlane (Victoria).

The Student Athlete Community Service Award went to Calgary’s Carlos Cruz, while the Fair Play Award went to the University of Victoria.

The schedule for the Canada West men’s championship is as follows. All games at the Trinity Western University Spartan Field. Semi-Final Number 1 University of British Columbia Thunderbirds vs. the University of Calgary Dinos, 3:30 PM Friday, November 4. Semi-Final Number 2 Trinity Western University Spartans vs. the University of Alberta Golden Bears, 6 PM, Friday, November 4.

Bronze Medal Game: Loser of Semi-Final #1 vs. Loser of Semi-Final #2, Saturday, November 5, 3:30 PM. Gold Medal Match: Winner of Semi-Final #1 vs. Winner of Semi-Final #2 Saturday, November 5, 6 PM.
