Volleyball Teams Honoured

Langley, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s and women’s volleyball teams pulled down five of the top Canada West awards this week.

TWU’s fifth year middle Rhonda Schmuland (Calgary) led the way for the women’s team as she was sent forth as the Canada West nominee for the Therese Quigley Award Nominee (outstanding achievement in volleyball, academics and community involvement). Third year middle Julie Blackburn (Surrey, B.C.) was awarded the Canada West Libero of the Year award for her outstanding defensive play for the Spartans. Rounding out the awards for the women was third year middle Liz Spear (Langley, B.C.), who was named a Canada West first team all-star.

On the men’s side TWU fifth year middle Chris Meehan (Clearwater, B.C.) and fourth year setter Josh Howatson (Victoria, B.C.) were both named Canada West first team all-stars.

Both teams are currently preparing for a run at a CIS national title. The women begin play in Calgary on Thursday, March 2 against the University of Calgary. Match time at the U of C is set for 8:00 p.m. MST. The men begin play in Hamilton, Ont. on Friday, March 3 against Queens University. Match time at McMaster University is set for 3:00 p.m. EST.

As official members of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, the Spartans compete in six sports in the Canada West division of the CIS: Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball. TWU has won one national championship in women’s soccer in 2004-05, two Canada West titles; one in women’s soccer in 2004-05 and one in men’s soccer in 2005-06. The Spartans have won four CIS championship medals. Women’s Soccer won gold in 2004-05, men’s volleyball took silver in 2004-05 and bronze in 2003-04, and men’s soccer earned bronze in 2005-06
 
Trinity Western University, located in Langley, B.C., is a not-for-profit Christian liberal arts university enrolling over 3,500 students this year. With a broad based, liberal arts and sciences curriculum, the University offers undergraduate degrees in 38 major areas of study ranging from business, education and computer science to biology and nursing, and 13 other graduate degrees including counselling psychology, theology and administrative leadership.
