SPARTANS VOLLEYBALL TEAMS REMAIN IN TOP TEN

LANGLEY, British Columbia
–The results of this past weekend sweep of the University of Regina Cougars has kept the Trinity Western University Spartans men’s volleyball team in the identical position as last week in the CIS Top Ten Rankings, while the women have dropped a spot after the weekend split with Regina. The TWU women sit at No. 5 after splitting 0-3, 3-0 with the No. 6 Cougars, while the men stand pat after 3-0, 3-1 wins over Regina. TWU men’s basketball team remains out of the top ten after a pair of road losses to No. 9 Simon Fraser. The Spartan men are currently in 15th spot.

Women’s basketball

The reigning national champion Clan lead the Top 10 for the seventh time in as many coaches’ polls this season following an 80-45 domination of Trinity Western (2-9) that improved their conference record to a Canada West-leading 11-0. Simon Fraser, which has racked up 49 straight wins since dropping its 2008-09 opener to Victoria, hosts Winnipeg (7-6) and Manitoba (5-8) this weekend.

Also of note this week in CIS women’s basketball, the defending OUA champion Windsor Lancers (11-1) drop from No. 2 to No. 3 behind Regina (10-2) after a 66-50 upset loss to McMaster (8-4) on Saturday.

Men’s basketball

Last year’s CIS finalists, the UBC Thunderbirds are 11-0 in conference play following a two-game sweep of Fraser Valley (6-6), 97-63 and 91-78. The T-Birds, who top the national rankings for a third straight week, hit the road this weekend for duels against Lethbridge (6-7) and No. 5 Calgary (10-3).

Women’s volleyball

The two-time reigning CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds improved to 13-0 in conference play last weekend with a two-game sweep of No. 9 Brandon (8-4), 3-2 and 3-0. The T-Birds, who lead the national rankings for the ninth time in as many polls in 2009-2010, go for a third straight sweep of a Top-10 rival this weekend when they host No. 8 Calgary (6-6) Friday and Saturday.

Men’s volleyball

The 2008-09 national finalist Laval Rouge et Or, who lead the Top 10 for the third consecutive week, improved to 11-0 in QSSF play thanks to a pair of straight-set wins over McGill (1-10) and Montreal (5-6). The Rouge et Or will try to keep their perfect season alive against a trio of AUS teams this weekend as they are set to face UNB (5-3), Memorial (1-9) and No. 3 Dalhousie (9-1) in interlock action.
