A LOOK AT THE WEEK AHEAD FOR THE TWU SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– This week in Spartan action, the men’s volleyball team competes at home in non-conference action, the basketball teams compete against provincial rivals, while the men’s hockey team is back on home ice in BCIHL action.

At the Langley Events Centre, the Spartan Holiday Classic Tournament is underway. On Monday, the Spartans bested the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club, comprised of Spartans past and present. This moves the Spartan team on to the semi-finals on Tuesday at 8 p.m. against a Queen’s team that made short work of the TRU Wolf Pack on Monday.  The winner of Tuesday night’s game advances to the finals on Wednesday night.

Other semi-finals and consolation games run at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 6 p.m., and 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.

In basketball action, the Spartans travel to Victoria to take on the University of Victoria Vikes on Friday and Saturday.

After coming back from Windsor, Ont., the women’s basketball team gets back into conference play against the No. 4 University of Victoria Vikes. The Spartan women (1-13) faced defeat before the break, in the form of losses to UFV with scores of 68-65 and 67-56.

The Vikes (9-3) played the University of Alberta before the holiday break, falling in both games with scores of 82-71 and 67-66.

The games will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday in Victoria. Live stats and streaming video can be found at http://www.sportscanada.tv/index.php/uvic-vikes-athletics.

The Spartan men’s basketball team (12-2) remains at No. 7 in the CIS and on a 10-game winning streak as they look to take on the unranked Vikes. The Spartans last played against the University of the Fraser Valley, garnering 92-73 and 114-89 wins.

The University of Victoria Vikes last conference games saw them play to a weekend split with the University of Alberta, with a 74-68 loss and a 93-91 overtime win in Edmonton. The Vikes currently possess a 7-5 record.

The men’s teams meet on Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m. in Victoria. The Vikes provide live stats and video at http://www.sportscanada.tv/index.php/uvic-vikes-athletics.

On the ice, the Spartans (4-6-1) will host the TRU Wolf Pack and the Selkirk Saints over the weekend.

The Spartans last competition was a pair of games against the University of Victoria, when the Spartans played to a weekend split with a 2-1 win and 4-2 loss.

The Spartans first host TRU (9-1), a team that last played in November to a 5-2 win over UFV.  The game begins at 7 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.

On Saturday, Selkirk College visits the Spartans.  The Saints last weekend of play saw them shut down in a 8-1 loss to UFV after a 9-1 loss to the Spartans.  The Saints and Spartans meet on Saturday at 7 p.m.
