KEG SPRING CUP PREVIEW

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SOCCER TEAMS TRAVEL TO VICTORIA FOR KEG SPRING CUP

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
Both the Trinity Western men’s and women’s soccer teams will compete in this weekend’s Keg Spring Cup in Victoria (Mar. 26-27) and both teams will be seeking a Cup victory in a tournament that hasn’t been all too friendly of late to the Langley-based squads.

The women’s soccer team will open the tournament Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against Victoria while the men’s team will play its first match against UBC at noon. All games are at Centennial Stadium.

The Spartans soccer program has long been a competitor in the annual tournament but in recent years has found itself coming up just short of winning the championship.

For the women’s team, a squad that won both the 2008 and 2009 CIS championship, each the last three tournaments have ended with a 1-1 tie in the bronze medal match. Last year, they tied Victoria. In 2009, they tied Fraser Valley. And in 2008, they tied UBC.

The Spartans women’s team made it to the final was in 2007 by beating UBC 3-1, but in the final lost 2-1 to Victoria in overtime.

As for the men, they have had mildly better success in recent years but also have yet to capture the tournament title.

Last year, the men’s team took home the bronze medal after a 7-2 romp over Fraser Valley. In 2009, they lost 2-1 to Saskatchewan in the championship game and thus settled for silver. And previous to that, the Spartans won back-to-back bronze medals, with a 4-1 win over Victoria in 2008 and a 2-0 win over Saskatchewan in 2007.

A Cup win for either team will be a big positive for the Spartans soccer teams in what was an otherwise disappointing 2010-11 campaign on the pitch. This past fall was the first time since 2003 that neither team made it to the CIS national championship. So this year’s Keg Spring Cup could well be a building block for next year.

The women’s team saw its 2010 fall season come to an end with a 3-2 shooutout loss to Fraser Valley in the Canada West semifinal while the men’s team, who had been to five straight national championships, finished fifth in the Canada West regular season standings and failed to make the playoffs.
