BLACKBERRY - CIS TOP 10 TUESDAY (#1) - SPARTANS WOMEN'S SOCCER START NO. 5, MEN'S SOCCER UNRANKED

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
The Trinity Western women’s soccer team will open the 2011 season as the No. 5 ranked team in the CIS while the men’s soccer team enters the year unranked.

For the women’s team, this will be the fifth year in a row,  it started the season ranked in the Top 10, which includes being ranked No. 1 entering the 2010 season and No. 2 entering the 2009 campaign.

After winning back-to-back CIS championships, in 2008 and 2009, the Spartans lost in the Canada West Final Four semifinal last year and ultimately finished fourth in the playoffs after a second place worthy 9-3-2 regular season record.

The Spartans women will open its Canada West schedule Saturday, Oct. 10 when they host UBC at 5:00 p.m.

As for the men, the Spartans, who missed the playoffs last year for the first time since 2002, start the season out of the CIS Top 10 after opening the 2010 campaign ranked No. 3.

The Spartans finished the 2010 regular season with a 5-5-4 record and, after falling out of the Top 10 following Week 5, TWU finished the year unranked.

Trinity Western opens its 2011 Canada West schedule Friday, Oct. 9 when they host Fraser Valley at 7:00 p.m.

Defending national champions York (men’s soccer) and Queen’s (women’s soccer) sit atop their respective Top 10 rankings to open the CIS season.

In women’s soccer the Queen’s Gaels open the season at number one after winning the national championship last year with a 1-0 overtime victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks who open the season ranked number two.

On the men’s side, the York Lions begin defense of their national championship ranked as the top team in the country, improving on their number 10 ranking to begin last season. The Lions opened their season on the road earning a 1-1 draw against Laurier on Friday before defeating the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 on Saturday.
