LANGLEY, British Columbia
– This week in Spartans action: the soccer teams take a road trip, the men’s volleyball and hockey teams compete in preseason play, and the cross country team participates in a meet.

Spartan soccer kicks off with No. 9 Spartan women taking on the No. 4 University of Alberta Golden Bears at the Golden Bear’s home field in Edmonton. The following afternoon the Spartans will play against the unranked University of Saskatchewan in a matinee game.

Last weekend the Spartans overwhelmed their two opponents, starting with a 4-1 win over the Manitoba Bison, and ending with a 3-0 shutout of the Regina Cougars. This brings the Spartan season record to 2-1-0.

But their first opponents, the Pandas, are a formidable one. The University of Alberta team boasts a 4-0 record, including last weekend's 3-1 win over the UFV Cascades and a 1-0 win against the University of Victoria Vikes. The Huskies remain unranked coming into the game against Trinity Western. Kick-off is at 12:00 p.m. in Saskatoon.

The unranked Spartan men will be following the a similar road schedule this weekend, beginning with a game against the Golden Bears in Edmonton, followed by a match versus the University of Saskatchewan. The Spartans last game was against rival UBC, when the Spartans battled to a 1-1 draw against the No. 2 team.

The Golden Bears hold a 2-1-1 record following their last weekend in play. The Alberta team played the University of Victoria to a 1-1 tie, which preceded the Golden Bears’ 2-1 win over the UFV Cascades. The Spartans and Golden Bears will clash at 2:15 p.m. on Friday, September 23.

The record of the No. 7 University of Saskatchewan Huskies stands at 3-1 after last weekend. The Huskies played to a 4-1 win over UFV before being upset by the University of Victoria Vikes for the Huskies first loss of the season, a 2-1 game. The Spartans and Huskies will square off on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. in Saskatoon.

This weekend the reigning CIS gold medal Spartan men’s volleyball team starts a short annual preseason tour through B.C.’s interior. The Spartans will play rival University of Alberta in Penticton, B.C. on September 22, then will play a second game against the Golden Bears at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, B.C. on September 23. Finally the Spartans will play against the UBC Okanagan Heat, a team in its first year in the CIS. This game will take place at the home of the Heat in Kelowna, B.C.

On the ice, the Spartan men’s hockey team has an exhibition game at home in Langley, B.C.  The Spartans will play league rivals, the Okanagan College Coyotes. The game starts at 1 p.m. on Spartan home ice at the Langley Events Centre.

The Spartan cross country team is also hitting the trails for the Whistler Spirit Run on Saturday at the Whistler Olympic Park in Whistler, B.C. The Spartans last meet at the Sundodger Invitational saw strong showings in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
