A LOOK AT THE WEEK AHEAD FOR THE TWU SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia  - This week at Trinity Western, the men’s hockey team opens the regular season against the reigning BCIHL champion Simon Fraser Clan. On the pitch, the women’s soccer team will play a pair of home games against Victoria and Fraser Valley while the men’s soccer team will play at UBC with a chance to take over top spot in Canada West with a win. The men’s volleyball team continues their preseason tour, first in Ontario, against McMaster Tuesday night, and later in Qatar for the Club World Championships. Finally the cross country team will compete in its third meet of the year when they participate in the Western Washington Classic Invitational.

The Spartan men’s hockey team takes to the ice to begin the BCIHL regular season in Burnaby against the Clan. Simon Fraser posted a 2-5-0 preseason record but three of the losses came against BCHL-based Junior “A” clubs and one loss came against NCAA Div. 1 Air Force Academy. Against BCIHL competition, the Clan was 2-1 with one win over Trinity Western and a split with Thompson Rivers.

As for the Spartans, they will enter the regular season having wrapped up their preseason schedule with a split against the University of Washington Huskies. In the first game the Spartans wound up in a ton of penalty trouble, racking up 60 penalty minutes, and ended up losing 7-4. The following night, the Spartans were a much more disciplined group and thus found themselves on the right side of a 9-1 win.
The Spartans and Clan face off at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8th at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby, B.C.

At home, at Roger’s field, the No. 4 Spartans women’s soccer team looks to continue its six game winning streak against Victoria and Fraser Valley. After a pair of wins last weekend over Regina (4-0) and Manitoba (4-1), the Spartans moved into a tie with Alberta for first place in Canada West but with a game in hand enter this weekend with the top winning percentage (.857) in the conference.
Trinity Western’s first opponent is Victoria. The unranked Vikes have a 4-2-2 record on the season and are coming off a weekend in which they tied the Calgary Dinos 1-1 before beating the Lethbridge Pronghorns 5-1 the following night.

Fraser Valley is enters the weekend unranked having posted a 3-3-2 record thus far, which includes a split last weekend at home. The Cascades dispatched Lethbridge 2-0 but then fell to the Calgary Dinos 1-0 the following afternoon.

Kickoff is at 5 p.m. on both Friday, Oct. 7th and Saturday, Oct. 8th at Rogers Park. Video broadcast and live stats are available at www.canadawest.tv.

In men’s soccer action, the Spartans will travel to UBC to take on the No.2 ranked Thunderbirds Friday, Oct. 7th. This game is pivotal as the Spartans sit only one point behind the Thunderbirds for top spot in Canada West.

The Spartans are riding a six game unbeaten streak, which includes last weekend’s home results in which they knocked off Lethbridge 3-0 and tied Calgary 1-1.

Meanwhile, UBC is also on a hot streak as they have yet to lose all season having earned four wins and three draws in seven games. Last weekend, the Thunderbirds easily dispatched the Pronghorns 4-1 before beating Calgary 3-2.

Game time is 7:15 p.m.

The Spartan men’s volleyball preseason continues further afield as the men will play McMaster Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. and then, leaving on Wednesday, will travel to Qatar for the prestigious FIVB Club World Championships. The Club Championships will begin on Oct. 8th in Doha, Qatar when they Spartans take on Russia’s Zenit Kazan at 10:00 p.m.  local time.

Finally, the Spartan cross country team continues their season with a race in Bellingham, WA. The Western Washington Classic Invitational takes place on Oct. 8th.
