A LOOK AT THE WEEK AHEAD FOR THE TWU SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– Three of the Spartan teams will take on the best in the nation this weekend, as the women’s soccer team and the men’s and women’s cross country teams compete at the CIS Championships. In regular season action, the Spartan volleyball and basketball teams will play games on the road and at home, respectively while the Spartans hockey team will continue its BCIHL season on the road.

The Spartans women soccer team will make its fifth CIS National Championship appearance in their 10-year history when they compete at McGill University this weekend. In their previous four appearances, the Spartans have won the national title three times and once again will be amongst the favourites to come away victorious in Montreal.

Playing host to the Canada West Final Four, Spartans women took captured the conference banner by first beating Victoria 3-0 in the semifinal and then later knocking off Alberta 2-1 (4-3 PK) in a thrilling gold medal match.

The Spartans are slated to kick off their first game at 7:30 p.m. EST on Thursday, Nov. 10 against the hosting McGill Martlets. The two teams locked horns earlier this year in a preseason tilt at Trinity Western and it was the Spartans coming away with a 3-2 victory.

The Spartans cross country teams will travel across the country to Quebec City to compete in the CIS Championships. Championship races will take place on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. The Spartans last competed with a select few athletes in the BC Provincial Championships. In this race, the Spartans Blair Johnston and Fiona Benson finished first in the men’s junior and women’s junior divisions, respectively.

In basketball action, the Spartans men’s and women’s basketball teams will play Winnipeg Friday and Manitoba Saturday this weekend at the Langley Events Centre.

The Spartans women split their home-opener last weekend with the Victoria Vikes. In the first game the Vikes took won 82-73 win but the Spartans returned the favour in the second game, coming away with a 69-55 victory.

The Winnipeg women boast a 2-0 record having bested Lethbridge in a pair of games with scores of 63-57 and 61-51. The Spartans and Wesmen will play Friday, Nov.  11 at 6 p.m.

On the following night the Spartans women will play Manitoba. The Bisons lost twice in a row last weekend when they played against Alberta. The season opener was an 81-71 game in favour of Alberta, while the next day the Bisons fell hard in a 67-44 loss. The game between the Bisons and the Spartans will take place at 5 p.m.

The Spartans men’s basketball team is winless on the season as they fell 93-79 and 86-75 to the Victoria Vikes last weekend. They seek redemption in their home stand this weekend.

Their first challenger will be the Winnipeg Wesmen, who comes into the weekend with a 1-1 record after a pair of games against Lethbridge. The Wesmen opened their season with 74-71 win over the Pronghorns. The following night was a hard-fought affair that saw the Wesmen fall in a nail biting 69-68 contest. The Wesmen will visit the Spartans on Friday at 8 p.m.

The Manitoba Bisons also sit with a 1-1 record after playing Alberta. The Bisons first game was a 91-81 loss to the Golden Bears, but on the next day the Bisons rebounded with a 85-83 win over Alberta. The Bisons and Spartans meet at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Spartans volleyball teams are back on the court after a bye weekend. The No. 6 women’s volleyball team, who are 2-0 after a road sweep over Saskatchewan, will travel to Brandon to play the unranked Brandon Bobcats, who are without a win in their four season starts. In their last weekend of play the Bobcats were unable to win a set against Winnipeg, resulting in a pair of 3-0 losses. The Spartans will play at 6 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday in Brandon.

On the men’s side, No. 1 Spartans will also be in Brandon to take on the No. 9 Bobcats. The Spartans are perfect on the season thus far after back-to-back wins over Saskatchewan to open the season.

The Bobcats, who lost to the Spartans in last year’s CIS national championship gold medal match, enter the weekend with a record of 4-0 which includes two 3-1 wins over No. 5 Calgary last weekend.  Fist serve in Brandon is at 7:45 p.m. on Nov.r 11 and 12.

On the ice the Spartans (1-6-1) will play the only team they have been able to beat this season. The Spartans will compete against the Selkirk Saints at Selkirk College. The Spartans last time on the ice resulted in a 3-1 loss to the Victoria Vikes.

Selkirk pulled off a pair of 4-1 wins over Eastern Washington last weekend. This improves their record to 3-5-0 as they host the Spartans on Saturday and Sunday. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Castlegar Recreation Centre in Castlegar, B.C.
