SPARTANS BACK AT DAVID E. AS ALL SPORTS GET GOING FOR SPRING SPRINT

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– This week the Spartans volleyball teams go back in time and play out of the David Enarson Gym, the basketball teams play their inaugural games at UBC Okanagan, while swimming is in New Westminster and Track and Field is off to Seattle.

In volleyball action the Spartans return to Canada West action with a bang as they are back at the David. E. Enarson Gym for the first time in nearly three years, as the LEC is currently being used for the Continental Cup Curling Championship.

The last time the Spartans men’s volleyball team played a Canada West match on campus was Feb. 14, 2009 in the final match of a best of three CW playoff series against Thompson Rivers. The last time the Spartans women’s volleyball team played a Canada West match was on Feb. 13, 2009 when the defeated the University of Manitoba on their way to a fifth place finish at the CIS championship in New Brunswick.

For the men only Marc Howatson, Rudy Verhoeff, Ben Ball and Jarrod Offereins and for the women only Amber Brown, Jodi Neufeld, Chelsea Hudson, Amy Leschied and Nicole Bazin were on the squad in their final match, for the rest of the Spartans it will be a new experience in the “friendly confines” of the David. E.

The No. 1 and unbeaten (10-0) TWU men’s volleyball will have the feature match of the week as the host the No. 3 University of Alberta Golden Bears (8-2) Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m. and 7 p.m. Both matches will take place at the David E. Enarson Gym on the campus of TWU.

On the women’s side the No. 8 Spartans (7-3) will take on the No. 2 University of Alberta Pandas (7-3) on Friday and Saturday evening at 6 p.m. and 5 p.m. Both matches will take place at the David E. Enarson Gym.

Note that both nights of volleyball action will have limited seating, so plan to arrive early. And the games will have live stats available, but they will not be streamed. Tickets are available on line or at the door at TWU’s David E. Enarson Gym.

The men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams will be off to Kelowna, B.C. to take on the UBC Okanagan Heat in Canada West action. It will be their first Canada West games in Kelowna and against the Heat in CW conference play.

On the men’s side the 4-6 Spartans will look to expand on their two game winning streak against the 2-6 Heat. Last week the Spartans beat Lethbridge 105-97 and Calgary 107-97 to keep their push for the play-offs alive. The Heat will be looking to build on last weekend’s split with Manitoba, 80-65 loss, and Winnipeg, 79-70 win, start a winning streak of their own. UBC-O is currently in the middle of a six game home stand. Their last CW road game was on Nov. 19 at UFV.

In women’s basketball action the 4-6 Spartans will be working hard for a weekend sweep of the 2-6 Heat. Last week the Spartans split their series with Lethbridge, 79-51 win, and Calgary, 71-59 loss. So far in Canada West TWU has split four of their five weekend series. The UBC-O Heat are on a bit of a hot streak having won two of their last three Canada West matches. Last weekend the Heat split with Manitoba and Winnipeg winning 74-61 on Friday and falling 76-64 on Saturday. The Spartans and the Heat have tangled once already this year in a pre-season match up on September 29 at the LEC. In the first game of the 2011-12 pre-season TWU had the better of UBC-O, winning 62-56.

Women’s games are scheduled for 6 p.m. starts, while the men are set for 8 p.m. All four games are scheduled to be broadcast live on CanadaWest.TV.

In swimming the Spartans will get back in action at the New Westminster Hyack Invitational on Saturday, January 14 in New Westminster.

While in Track and Field the Spartans will kick off the 2012 season at the University of Washington Preview on Saturday, January 14.
