SPARTANS FINAL WEEK OF CANADA WEST SEASON

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– This week all the Spartan indoor teams play at home, while the track team will participate in a meet in Washington. Both basketball teams will play their last game of the season on Thursday, against the Fraser Valley Cascades. Volleyball will play their last pair of games at home against the rival UBC Thunderbirds. In hockey the Spartans will play a home-and-home series against Simon Fraser.

On the basketball court, the Spartans will compete against the Cascades on an unconventional day. The men’s basketball team has clinched their spot in the playoffs after last weekends’ sweep of the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. Trinity Western remains unranked, but boosted their record to 10-7 as they look forward to their last game of the season.

In the Spartans first game the Wolf Pack, Trinity Western earned a decisive 89-77 win over Thompson Rivers. On the next day at the Langley Events Centre, the Spartans kept their momentum with a 97-92 win over the WolfPack.

The Spartans last regular season game of the year is against the No. 8 Cascades. UFV will be putting their 12-5 record and five game winning streak on the line. Last weekend the Cascades hosted and beat the No. 3 UBC Thunderbirds in two games. The Cascades started with a 77-72 win over the visiting Thunderbirds, and finished the weekend with an impressive 94-83 win over UBC. With this pair of wins the Cascades find themselves with a guaranteed position in the playoffs.

The Spartans and Cascades will play on Thursday, February 9 at 8 p.m. Canadwest.tv hosts live stats and live streaming video for Spartans fans.

The Spartans women’s basketball team is still in a position to challenge for a playoff position, but will face the 11-6 UFV Cascades in a single game on Thursday. Trinity Western had a tough weekend as they fell in two games against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. In the first of two games, the Spartans were edged out 66-61 by the visiting WolfPack. In game two, the WolfPack overcame the Spartans 76-58 to sweep the weekend.

UFV will be visiting the Spartans home court after splitting their series against the Thunderbirds last weekend. In the first game, the Cascades managed to corral the No. 3 UBC and win a 65-57 game. On the next day, their task wasn’t as simple. The Thunderbirds were not finished and managed to eke out a 60-58 victory over the Cascades.

The Langley Events Centre will host the Cascades and Spartans at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 9. Live streaming video and live stats will be available during the game at canadawest.tv.

On the volleyball court, the Spartans will play their cross-town rival, the UBC Thunderbirds. Trinity Western remains at No.1 following their pair of wins last weekend over the No. 7 Calgary Dinos. Trinity Western solidified their place at the top of the rankings, starting with their 3-0 sweep of the Dinos on Friday night. On Saturday, Trinity Western dropped one set but still cruised to a 3-1 win, improving their record to 17-1.

The Spartans will play the No. 6 UBC Thunderbirds in two games at home in Langley, B.C. UBC has a 10-8 record and is guaranteed a spot in the playoffs after their split last weekend against Brandon. In game one the Thunderbirds got the upper hand, and consequently managed a 3-1 win. On the next day Brandon fought back, keeping the Thunderbirds from taking a set and leading to a 3-0 Brandon victory.

The Spartans will play the Thunderbirds at 8 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre. Live streaming video from the LEC and live stats of the game will be online at canadawest.tv.

Women’s volleyball will also face the Thunderbirds in a two game series at the Spartan home court. The Spartans are 12-6 after being upset in two games against the unranked Calgary Dinos. The Spartans started strong, but wound up falling 3-1 in the first game of two against the Dinos. In game two the women found themselves unable to prevail, and were once again on the wrong side of a 3-1 game.

Trinity Western will be challenging the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds and trying to end UBC’s nine game winning streak. The Thunderbirds took every set against Brandon last weekend, leading to two 3-0 wins to give UBC a 17-1 record.

The two teams will clash on the Spartans home court at the Langley Events Centre on Friday and Saturday. Games will start at 6 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday, and can be viewed via live streaming video or following on live stats at canadawest.tv.

In hockey action, the Spartans play a home-and-home series against the league-leading Simon Fraser. Last weekend Trinity Western played in two high-scoring games, the first against Selkirk and the second against Okanagan College. In the tilt against Selkirk, the Spartans managed an impressive comeback to take the game 6-5 on home ice. But their luck ran out against the Okanagan Coyotes, and Trinity Western fell 9-3.

Last weekend SFU saw mixed results, starting with an offensively stellar 12-4 win over Selkirk College. But on the next day, Simon Fraser suffered their first regulation loss in the season in a 5-4 loss to Thompson Rivers.

The first game between SFU and TWU will be on Spartan ice on Friday, with the puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre. Langleyeventscentre.com will host live streaming video of the game. The Spartans will then travel to the Simon Fraser home ice to play a game at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

In track and field action, the Spartans are crossing the border to attend the University of Washington track meet. The Spartans have given strong performances in this, their second year. Last weekend Trinity Western split their athletes between the Bison Invitational at the University of Manitoba and the Harry Jerome Indoor Meet at Richmond, B.C.
