SPARTANS INTO THE SECOND SEASON

LANGLEY, British Columbia
–This week in Spartans action the postseason is in full swing for the CIS teams. The defending CIS champion men’s volleyball team will host the Canada West Final Four this weekend in their quest for the second consecutive championship. Meanwhile, the women’s volleyball team will play in the Final Four at UBC. In basketball action the men’s team travels to Saskatchewan to compete in the Canada West quarter finals. On the ice the Spartans will play a pair of games, at home and on the road. In swim team action, the Spartans participate in the CIS Championships in Montreal, while the track and field team is at the Canada West Championships.

On home court for the CW Final Four, the Spartan men’s volleyball team has been a force to be reckoned with in the past year. The Spartans will start the tournament off by playing the Calgary Dinos for the chance to advance to the finals.

Last weekend the Spartans had a bye, but in the weekend before they swept their UBC rivals in a two game series. In both games the Spartans won by a 3-0 margin, not allowing their Thunderbird opponents a single set win over two days.

Their opponent, the Calgary Dinos, qualified for the Final Four in a tight series against Brandon. In the opening match, the Dinos managed a 3-1 win on the Calgary home court. Despite the chance to finish the series, the Dinos stumbled and wound up getting swept by Brandon in a 3-0 loss. With the series tied at one apiece, the Dinos held on for a 3-1 victory losing only one set – an exhausting 37-35 third frame that was taken by Brandon. With the win, Calgary earned their place in the game against the Spartans this weekend.

Calgary and Trinity Western will tilt at 8 p.m. on Friday night. The game will be broadcast online at langleyeventscentre.com.

After handily defeating their opponents last weekend, the Spartan women’s volleyball team have made a place for themselves in the CW Final Four at UBC. Their next challenge will be the host of the tournament, the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds.

In their series against Calgary last weekend, the Spartans earned a decisive 2-0 series win. In the best-of-three series, the Spartans started off strong with a 3-1 match win, dropping only the third set to the Dinos. In the second game the Spartans were the better team as they overcame the Dinos 3-0 to win the series and advance to the Final Four.

The Thunderbirds had a bye last weekend, meaning that their last game was a two game series against the Spartans. The Thunderbirds were upset in the first game by the tenacious Spartans, who took a 3-2 win to hand the Thunderbirds their second loss of the season. In the second game the Thunderbirds came back in fine form, victorious is a 3-0 game.

The two teams will clash at 6:15 on Friday in the War Memorial Gym at UBC. The winner will advance to the finals while the loser will play for third place on Saturday with the top three teams advancing to the CIS championship at McMaster University March 3-5.

In basketball action the Spartans men’s team has a chance to qualify for the Canada West Final Four in their best-of-three series against the No. 3 Saskatchewan Huskies. The Spartans were not playing last weekend, but in the week before they played a single game against the UFV Cascades. Despite seeing success in recent games, the Spartans fell 89-70 in what was their last regular season game.

Saskatchewan is the top Canada West team with a 16-4 record and a ten game winning streak. Last weekend the Huskies trounced the Regina Cougars in a 110-70 game to finish the regular season.

The Huskies and Spartans will play up to three games to determine who advances to the semi-finals. The first game tips off at 8 p.m. in Saskatoon on Friday, while the second starts at the same time on Saturday. If necessary, Sunday will be the final and deciding game at 8 p.m.

On the ice the Spartans will play Thompson Rivers this weekend in Kamloops, B.C. Trinity Western is sixth in the league with a 4-12-4 record after their last loss against Okanagan College. After sixty minutes the Spartans found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-3 game.

The WolfPack hold an 11-6-4 record following last week`s split versus Selkirk College. In the first of the two game series, Selkirk took the advantage and wound up with a 6-4 win over the WolfPack. In the next game Thompson Rivers came on strong and scored 9-3 victory over their Selkirk opponent.

The Spartans and WolfPack will play on Friday night, with puck drop scheduled for 8:30 p.m. On Saturday the Spartans Alumni will play an exhibition game against the Canucks Alumni. That game will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.

Meanwhile, the Spartans swim team sends their qualifying swimmers to the CIS Championships at the University of Montreal. The competition runs from Thursday to Saturday and features the best intercollegiate swimmers in Canada.

In track and field action the Spartans are competing at the Canada West Championships in preparation for the CIS Championships. The team is at the University of Saskatchewan to take on the best in Canada West competition on Friday and Saturday.
