SPARTANS AT NATIONALS, HOCKEY AT HOME

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– This week in Spartan action the volleyball teams play in their respective CIS Championships, while the Spartan hockey team plays a game at home. The men’s volleyball team goes to Kingston, Ont. to compete at the National Championships at Queen’s University. Meanwhile, the women’s team also travels to Ontario, but this time to McMaster University to participate in the Championships. At home in Langley, B.C. the men’s hockey team plays their third to last game of the year.

Last weekend the 19-1 Spartan men’s volleyball team hosted the Canada West Final Four at their home court in the Langley Events Centre. The reigning CIS Champion Spartans were first faced with the Calgary Dinos. In the game, the Spartans took control of the game from the start. With the team sharp and on task, the Spartans took a quick 3-0 victory over the Dinos.

In the Canada West Finals, the Spartans faced the only team that has handed them a loss – the Manitoba Bisons. Trinity Western took the first set despite a tightly contested frame, winning 25-23. The Bisons stampeded back, by winning the next two sets and putting the Spartans on the ropes. But Trinity Western proved their mettle by winning the next two sets and ultimately taking the game, 3-2.

The Spartans will kick off their run for the championship against the No. 8 Dalhousie Tigers (12-5), a team that managed to earn the Atlantic University Sport championship. Last weekend the Tigers earned the right to represent the AUS by beating UNB in two games, both with scores of 3-1. The game will take place at 5 p.m. PST at Queen’s University, and will be broadcast live on SSN Canada at ssncanada.ca.

In women’s volleyball action, the Spartans (13-7) managed to capture the Canada West Bronze medal at the Canada West Final Four in Vancouver. The Spartans were overcome by the UBC Thunderbirds in the first game 3-0, but the Spartans were able to take a 3-0 win of their own against Winnipeg to take the bronze medal. Going into the tournament, the Spartans are seeded No. 6 in the CIS, meaning they will be meeting the No. 3 Montreal Carabins for their first game of the tournament.

The Carabins (12-3) took first place in the Réseau de Sport Étudiant du Quebec division, gaining the RSEQ championship by beating their rival McGill in two games with scores of 3-1 and 3-0.
The Spartans and Carabins will play at 10 a.m PST on Friday. This, and all games during the Championships, can be streamed lived from ssncanada.ca.

Finally, the Spartans men’s hockey team is playing their final home game of the regular season. Trinity Western played Thompson Rivers last weekend in Kamloops, B.C. but were unable to overcome the aggressive WolfPack team. By the end of three periods, the Spartans were edged out 4-3 to bring their record to 4-13-4.

They will be playing against the 8-10-2 Victoria squad. Victoria has been out of play since a two game series against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Feb. 11 and 12. In the first of the two games on Victoria’s home ice, the WolfPack got the better of Victoria with a 5-1 win. On the next day Victoria turned it around with a 7-6 thriller against the WolfPack.

The Spartans and Victoria will meet at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Langley Events Centre. The game can be streamed from langleyeventscentre.com.
