SPARTANS SOCCER GETS GOING WITH SPRING PLAY

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– This week the Spartans soccer teams will participate in a few non-conference matches for their spring season. In men’s soccer action the Spartans will host the NCAA Simon Fraser Clan. Meanwhile, the Spartans women’s team will play a pair of home matches.

The Spartans men’s soccer team ended last season without a trip to the CIS Championships. Their next game this spring season is a home match against a non-conference opponent, the Simon Fraser Clan.

Last year the Spartans were edged out in the Canada West bronze medal game and came home empty-handed after the 1-0 loss. The Spartans spent the first part of the season on a hot streak, peaking at No. 8 in the middle of the season. By the end of the season Trinity Western had an 8-4-2 record to put them in third place in the Canada West division.

This spring the Spartans will look to some younger players to step in and get valuable playing experience against a quality opponent.

This week’s opposition, the Clan, was dominant in the NCAA last season. In their 19 games last season, the Clan were unbeatable, and were only tied once in the season.

These two teams have not met since last spring when the two teams played to a 1-1 tie on March 16.

Their next game will be at Rogers Field at Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 15.

Last year the Spartans women soccer team was overcome at the 2011 CIS Championships and came home without a medal. With a dominant team, the Spartans will start their spring season with a pair of home games at Roger Field.

The Spartans were a force to be reckoned with all of the 2011 season, accumulating a 12-1-1 record. In the Canada West Championships the Spartans won the gold medal with an exciting game decided by penalty kicks. Going into the CIS Championships Trinity Western was No.2 ranked but fell to the host McGill Martlets 1-0 in penalty kicks.

Their first challenge for the Spartans will be the Fraser Valley Cascades, a team with a 3-8-3 record in their 2011 season. The Cascades finished last season without making it to the playoffs. The last time that the Spartans and Cascades clashed was on Oct. 11, 2011 when the Spartans won a 1-0 game.

The two teams will play on Monday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Rogers Field at Trinity Western University.

Next up will be the UBC Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds were chasing the Spartans all season in 2011, finishing the season just behind Trinity Western with an 11-1-2 record. The Thunderbirds earned the Canada West bronze medal in 2011.

The Spartans and Thunderbirds will play on Friday at 7 p.m. on Rogers Field in Langley, B.C.
