CANEBALL TOURNAMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CANEBALL COMING TO TRINITY WESTERN AND IT’S GOING TO BE HUGE

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
The David E. Enarson Gymnasium on the Trinity Western campus will be rocking this Saturday as a number of Spartans athletes will be helping to host the second annual Htoo Htoo Sepak Takraw Tournament of Champions.

And this year, the Trinity Western athletes who are involved, largely from the men’s and women’s soccer teams but also spanning the entire Spartans community, are taking the event to an entirely different level.

This year, every bright light and every ardent Spartans fan will be in attendance. This year, the Spartan Faithful is coming to play.

The tournament will start at 9:00 a.m. with the final set to begin at 2:30 p.m.

The flash mob will gather outside the David E. Enarson Gym at 10:00 a.m.

Admission is FREE.

The sport of Sepak Takraw, or cane ball, is one that, to the North American audience, is basically volleyball but using feet instead of hands. And for the Karen community in Langley – a group of refugees from Myanmar (formerly Burma) who have developed a special bond with the Spartans athletes through once-a-week soccer clinics and homework club nights – Sepak Takraw is the sport they know and love best.

So this Saturday, nearly 50 athletes from around the Lower Mainland will descend upon Trinity Western’s campus, for a one-day tournament featuring a sport that puts most other athletic feats to shame. CLICK HERE for video proof.

The tournament will once again be played in honour of Htoo K’Bru Paw, a young girl who passed away a month before last year’s event.

While the event will be similar in its on-court nature compared to last year, in the stands, it’ll be another story altogether. This year, the bleachers will be packed.

While the tournament starts at 9:00 a.m., outside the gym, at 10:00 a.m., Spartans athletes, the Trinity Western community and anyone who desires to be part of the festivities, will be gathering to “storm” the gym in flash mob style. Just don’t tell the competitors themselves. This is still a secret.

Initiated by men’s basketball player Tristan Smith, the Spartans Faithful will make posters, paint their faces, dress in yellow and blue, make a whole lot of noise and as Smith says, “cheer these kids on like they are competing in a Spartans national championship game.”

The event will be filmed and broadcasted, including play-by-play announcers.

“These athletes have tremendous stories, coming from a widely turbulent society and culture in Asia,” Smith said. “This will be an exciting way for the entire community to come together and surprise a bunch of kids with a huge dose of encouragement and support for no reason other than to make them feel happy and welcomed, while performing on our campus.”

And for many of the Spartans athletes, this will be their opportunity to cheer on the kids they’ve befriended over the past several years.

The Spartans soccer teams have been working with a number of athletes who will be competing in the Sepak Takraw tournament in helping them to feel more comfortable in Canada, both socially and academically. Trinity Western athletes got involved with tutoring the Karen kids through the PuCKS program (Promoting Community through Kids in Sport) alongside Margaret Kunst.

“It's always a struggle to adapt within a new culture,” Smith said. “The PuCKS program tries to help by offering teams, games and activities for kids to enjoy as long as they commit to a certain amount of hours being tutored and mentored by our Spartan athletes, along with other supervisors and specialists.

“We want to show these kids love and support in a real Spartan way.”
