SEPAK TAKRAW TOURNAMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TRINITY WESTERN BUZZING FOR SEPAK TAKRAW

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
Trinity Western’s David E. Enarson Gymnasium was buzzing Saturday as the Spartans men’s soccer team, along with a bevy of other Spartans athletes, hosted the second annual Htoo Htoo Sepak Takraw Tournament of Champions.

The event, which featured 12 teams from around the Lower Mainland playing a sport, known as both Sepak Takraw and caneball, that looks similar to volleyball except one uses one’s feet and head instead of hands, was an overwhelming success that was accompanied by an impressive and boisterous student-generated crowd.

And on the court, it was Team “See Ya” winning the tournament for a second consecutive year while Team “MCFC” finished second and “FC Karen” took third.

"Overall the tournament was a huge success,” said Spartans men’s soccer player and tournament organizer Cody Strelau, who has been part of a group of Trinity Western athletes who have connected with Langley’s Karen community (a group of refugees from Myanmar) and, amongst other things, learned all about caneball. “We had more teams than last year and the promo around the school brought more people to come check it out.

“Trinity Western has blessed us with so much and we take seriously the fact that, to whom much has been given, much is expected. Whether it is in homework club, indoor soccer nights, Xbox/Bible study nights or putting on a caneball tournament, working with the Karen community has been a small way in which we are able to pass on the blessings that we have received and are extremely grateful for.”

While the athletes competed on the court, in the stands Spartans men’s basketball player Tristan Smith had helped organize a group of Trinity Western students to support the tournament with their attendance and, whilst doing so, make a whole lot of noise. A group of about 30 students stormed the gym midway through the competition, which gave the tournament a fun and vibrant atmosphere.

The tournament is named in honour of Htoo K’Bru Paw, a young girl who passed away a month before last year’s event.

The Spartans soccer teams have been working with a number of athletes who competed in the Sepak Takraw tournament in helping them to feel more comfortable in Canada, both socially and academically. Amongst a number of different aspects of their connection, Trinity Western athletes got involved with tutoring the Karen kids through the PuCKS program (Promoting Community through Kids in Sport) alongside Margaret Kunst.
