VOLLEYBALL TEAMS OPEN 2012-13 SEASON AGAINST RIVAL UBC

LANGLEY, BRITISH COLUMBIA – Both the men’s and women’s volleyball CIS national champions will be on display when Trinity Western opens its 2012-13 Canada West regular season as the men’s title holding Spartans and women’s champion UBC Thunderbirds will be in the same gym on back-to-back nights as Trinity Western and UBC launch their respective seasons with a home-and-home weekend series Oct. 26-27.

The two local rivals locked horns to end the regular season last year and will renew acquaintances early this year, with Friday’s games being played at UBC’s War Memorial Gym and Saturday’s games being played at Trinity Western’s Langley Events Centre. The opening weekend series will see the Spartans men begin their quest for a third straight national crown while the Thunderbirds women will be starting a season as the defending CIS champions for the fifth straight year.

Much like last year’s schedule, when the Spartans calendar was back-loaded with traditional rivals and volleyball powers, Trinity Western will once again have to wait until the second half of the season before they see the likes of Manitoba, Calgary and Alberta. But when they do, the heavy-hitting opposition will come in waves as Trinity Western will host Manitoba, the only team to beat the Spartans men last year, Jan. 18-19 and Calgary Feb. 1-2 before finishing the season on the road at Alberta Feb. 8-9.

Beyond Calgary, Manitoba and UBC, the Spartans home schedule includes dates against Thompson Rivers, Saskatchewan and Brandon while they will travel to play Regina, Winnipeg, UBC Okanagan, Mount Royal and, as mentioned, UBC and Alberta.

While nearly all of the Spartans games will be contested Friday and Saturday nights, two weekends – one home and one away – will differ. Trinity Western will play on the road against UBC Okanagan Dec. 1-2, which consists of Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon tilts, and will host Brandon Jan. 10 and 12, which sees games being played Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon.

See below for the complete Spartans schedules.

The 2012-13 Canada West volleyball schedule takes on a new look, with a 22-match schedule and an even dozen teams that will allow all teams to play each weekend now that Calgary-based Mount Royal University has been added to the mix.

The playoffs feature the top seven in both men’s and women’s play at the end of the 22-match regular season schedule on February 9. While the top school on each side of the ledger receives a bye to the conference Final Four as host of the event, the remaining six play a best-of-three elimination format to determine the other finalists, Feb. 15-17. The Final Four semifinals will be played Feb. 22 with the medal matches going Feb. 23.

Sherbrooke is the site for this year’s eight-team women’s volleyball CIS National Championship Feb. 28-Mar. 2, where UBC hopes to be in defence of its current five-year run as champions while the men’s event, where the Spartans will hope to be in the hunt for their third straight title, is slated for Mar. 1-3 at Université Laval.

Complete, detailed broadcast schedules will become available as the season approaches.
