CIS TOP 10 TUESDAY (#1)
Spartans women soccer ranked No. 1 in preseason poll

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The reigning CIS and Canada West champion Trinity Western women’s soccer team will open the 2013 campaign atop the national rankings as the Spartans were slotted in at No. 1 in the preseason poll. The Spartans men’s soccer team was unranked.

In women’s soccer, TWU edged Queen’s on kicks in the 2012 CIS final to capture the Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy for the third time in five years, and the fourth time in school history. The Spartans, who put together a 1-1 preseason record following a 2-0 win over Saskatchewan (Aug. 26) and a 3-1 loss to Western Washington of the NCAA (Aug. 31), kick off their Canada West schedule on Saturday when they visit their archrivals from UBC.

In men’s soccer, the Spartans, who posted a 9-1-4 regular season record last season before finishing fourth in the Canada West playoffs, open the season unranked despite an undefeated preseason in which they went 2-0-2. The Spartans kick-off the 2013 regular season on the road against Fraser Valley Sept. 6 before travelling to Victoria for a contest on Sept. 8.
