Josh Howatson will leave TWU as one of the best players to ever wear the Spartan colours. He has been an all-Canadian, a CIS tournament all-star and a member of the Canadian National team. His ability to run the Spartan offense as well as attack the other team from the end line has helped TWU rise to being one of the premier programs in North America. Josh currently holds fourteen TWU men’s volleyball records,
2007-03-15-Josh McCaig
Spartan of the Week - date: th, at
Josh McCaig is known for performing amazing feats while patrolling the centre and forward parts of the TWU soccer pitch, hence his nickname “Magic”. The fifth year forward enters the final postseason of his playing career as one of the stalwarts of the Spartan men’s soccer program. McCaig is currently TWU’s all-time leading goal scorer with 23 goals and total points with 56.

Jodi Schaufele has been a key component in bringing the TWU women’s volleyball program from the bottom of the conference to a national contender. Throughout her career she has developed into a consistently great all around player who possesses a solid passing ability and knack for scoring. In the 2005-06 season she earned TWU’s first ever CIS National Athlete of the Week award for her strong performance in TWU’s win over Alberta which saw her tally 16 kills, 15 digs, and seven blocks.

You can’t miss Luke Robinson when he is on the floor for the Spartans. He is not the biggest, the fastest or the strongest player on the team, but he plays with passion and when he flashes the smile it lets everyone in the David E. know that this is a fun game to play.

Spartan of the Week - date: th, at
Saralyn, who is currently in her fourth year with the Spartans, statistically ranks as one of TWU’s top offensive players of all-time. She holds two of the top four records for kills in a match (18 x 2), is tied for fourth for most points in a mach (20.5), is third, fourth and fifth for total kills in a season (239, 223, 215), sits second all-time for career kills (721) and attack attempts (2246). But it is what Saralyn brings to the team off of the court which will be the landmark of her career once it concludes next season.

Stephanie Stewart grew with the Spartans as infants on the Canada West soccer stage to one of the powers of the CIS. She joined a young group of players who would eventually win TWU’s first ever CIS national championship in 2004. She is now a veteran leader of another quality group that is looking to get back to the championship tournament.

Spartan of the Week - date: th, at
Jon Schmidt came to TWU last year after earning national recognition as a member of the Columbia Bible College men’s basketball team. As a member of the Bearcat’s Jon was recognized as one of the top college players in the NCCAA, in 2004-05 he was selected as an NCCAA 1st team All-American and was named NCCAA West Regional MVP and tournament all-star. He led CBC in scoring (17.1), three point percentage (39.7%) and free throw percentage (77%). Jon was ready to make the step up to TWU and Canada West.
2006-11-27-Alicia Van Huizen

The 2006-07 season has been a coming out party for rightside/leftside hitter Alicia Van Huizen. The fourth year student currently leads the Spartans in total kills with 72, total attacks with 181 and is second in kills per game at 3.00. Prior to this season Van Huizen’s career high for kills in a match was 11, which she set against Cal State Northridge on September 3, 2004. So far this season she as bettered this total on three separate occasions. Her new single match mark for kills in a match is 16, which she set on November 10 in a 3-2 win over the University of British Columbia. To put the mark in perspective only four TWU women’s volleyball players have posted more kills in a match.

It is difficult to comprehend the pain and anguish that Steve Rogalsky was feeling at the end of the 2005 CIS championship loss to the University of Alberta. You could only see it on his face. He and the rest of his teammates had just spent two and a half hours giving ever bit of themselves in an effort to win the gold medal, only to come up two points short in the fifth set.

A combination of quickness, young talent and a mature influence will help the Spartans be solid through the midfield this season and Lindsay Rohla has already demonstrated that she can have a huge impact on the way the team plays by controlling the tempo of play and providing an important influence from midfield.
