SPARTANS BAZIN HELPING IN HAITI

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western women’s volleyball middle Nicole Bazin (Winnipeg) graduated just this past spring but it didn’t take her long to take her talents abroad, as earlier this year she travelled to Haiti to help develop a burgeoning volleyball program near Les Cayes.

From May 14-28, Bazin travelled to Haiti where she joined Rob and Debbie Wray and their family, who are full-time missionaries with Harvest International, to help coach a group of young volleyball-playing girls in the southwestern region of Haiti.

The Wray family has lived in Haiti for nearly a decade and has worked to build a volleyball program – which includes two teams, one for 11 to 13-year-olds and one for 14 to 16-year-olds – that creates opportunities for local girls to not only develop their skills, but also to create a better life for both themselves and their families.

Bazin, who was one of the Spartans starting middles for the better part of the last four years, had a chance to spend two weeks in Haiti working with and coaching these children.

“Coaching the teams was just awesome,” Bazin said. “I was there to help them put some systems in place. The girls’ technique is good and they have amazing control.

“It’s pretty awesome to go there and see what volleyball gives them in terms of opportunity and improvement of their quality of life,” Bazin said. “They probably would have never had the chance to go to the big city if they weren’t on this team. Plus, they can win prizes like jars of peanut butter or clothing that the Wray family gets through their ministry.”

Since coming back to Canada, Bazin has already started to take steps towards returning to Haiti, but this time, in conjunction with Athletes in Action. she plans to bring a group of Lower Mainland high school students to Les Cayes in March 2014.

“I think it’d be cool for these kids to see a good level of volleyball with kids similar in age,” Bazin said. “They can train with them and coach and help around the community.”

For the next several months, Bazin will be looking for support and to raise money for her planned trip in March.
