Team Effort Keeps Spartans Undefeated

Langley, British Columbia - On Saturday October 16 the Trinity Western University Spartans women's basketball team hosted the Capilano College Blues from North Vancouver. It was not Capilano's night as the Spartans dominated the Blues in every category including the final score, a convincing 27 point victory, 69-42.

The Spartans started out slow, with 10:30 to go in the first half the Spartans were holding on to a slim 2 point lead, 12-10. The next 5 minutes was a completely different story for the Spartans. Trinity Western's bench sparked a 13-2 run which put the Spartans up 25-12 with 5:15 to go in the first half. The Spartans maintained the margin for the rest of the half and went into the locker room at half time with a solid 13 point lead, 32-19.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first. Eight minutes into the stanza the Blues had cut the Spartans lead by 4 point, 41-32, and were looking for more. Once again the Spartans bench and defense took over. Over the next seven minutes TWU took apart Capilano and went on a 17-0 run to push their lead back up to an insurmountable 26 points, 58-32. The game ended with the Spartans exchanging baskets with the Blues for a comfortable victory.

"Emotionally we were a little lower than what we were Friday night [against University College of the Fraser Valley], but that was to be expected. I knew that we would be a little down after winning such a big game. Tonight we focussed as a team to do the little things that help you win. I would attribute this victory to us playing team basketball," said TWU Head Coach Rebecca Hays.

Leading the way for the Spartans were Alaina Thiessen (12 points, 8 rebounds), Katie Hall (13 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals), Trina Nelson (11 points, 5 rebounds), and Denise Page (9 assists, 5 points, 3 rebounds, 1 blocked shot). "I was very pleased with the way our bench played. We had 43 points off of our bench, which just shows how much of a team effort we had tonight," commented Hays.

Statistical leaders for the Blues were Melissa Chancey (10 points, 15 rebounds, 4 blocked shots) and Lindsay Diehl (9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocked shots).

The next game for the Spartans is next Friday October 22, when they complete the home and home with the Blues. The game will be played at the Capilano College Sportplex, tip off is set for 7:00 pm.
