Wesmen Hand Spartans First Loss of Season

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's basketball team traveled to Winnipeg to play the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in Canada West/GPAC league play, and had their hands full with the number 5 ranked team in the CIAU.

Trinity Western started strong, as they kept pace with Winnipeg and found themselves down only 7 points, 42-35 after 20 minutes of play. Unfortunately the Spartans could not handle the defensive pressure applied by the Wesmen in the second half. The Wesmen forced the Spartans into numerous mistakes and cruised to a 34 point victory, 92-58.

"We couldn't take care of the ball in the second half and that ended up costing us the game," commented TWU coach Rebecca Hays. The Spartans turned the ball over a season high 39 times, 14 more times than the Wesmen. The Spartans also had difficulty containing Winnipeg's 1998-99 CIAU 2nd team all-star Erin Soroko. Soroko led all scorers with 28 points.

Leading the way for the Spartans were Alaina Thiessen (20 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) and Denise Page (16 points, 4 steals, 2 assists). "Thiessen had her best game of the year, she played very well," said Hays.
Winnipeg was led by Erin Soroko (28 points, 7 steals and 5 rebounds) and Heidi Schwartz (14 points).

The two teams play again tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 13, at the University of Winnipeg's Duckworth Centre. Game time is 6:15 pm local time.
