Game Recap

Women's Basketball (league)
December 3, 1999
T.W.U. Spartans (60) vs. University of Manitoba (67)

Comeback Kids Fall Short

Langley, British Columbia - It looked over early, but the Spartans rallied back to tie the game. The Trinity Western University women's basketball team was down 13 points to the University of Manitoba early in the second half, but found themselves tied 55-55 with just over 3 minutes to play. The Bisons held on to win 67-60 on December 3.

Manitoba improves to 4-5 in league action and the Spartans drop to 2-5 in Canada West action.

"It wasn't a bad game for only playing 20 minutes," said Head Coach Rebecca Hays. The Spartans were down 12 points at the half-time break, but stormed back in the second stanza. A three-point basket by Carissa Roosma tied the game at 55. Down the stretch it was the turnovers that killed the Spartans and after a couple defensive errors and offensive breakdowns the Bisons were able to hold on to their 7 point win.

"At half-time I talked about desire and doing the small things. When we don't do the small things it really kills us and we need to do them all the time and not just here and there. We need to cut down on our turnovers and we will be right there," stated Hays.

Denise Page led the Spartans with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. Cheryl Jean-Paul's 10 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists led Manitoba. "Denise was a spark in the fact that she aggressively attacked. We were fearful to attack their defense and Denise really got us on track," noted Hays.

The Spartans played Winnipeg (4th ranked team in the nation) to seven points in their last league game and tonight played Manitoba (5th ranked team in the nation) to seven points. TWU will look to overcome that deficit when they host the Bisons for the second night straight on December 4. Game time will be 6:15 p.m.
