Depth and Experience Too Much for Spartans

Langley, British Columbia - On Monday, December 20, 1999 the Trinity Western University Spartans hosted the Simon Fraser University Clan in women's basketball action. Simon Fraser came into the game with a perfect 8-0 record and ranked #2 in the NAIA. The Spartans who are 9-7 overall came into tonight's game looking to measure them-selves against the high powered Clan. For the first 10 minutes of the game the Spartans matched the Clan point for point as they only trailed by 3 points, 23-20 with 9:40 to go in the first half. It was at this time that the Clan turned up the pressure and went on a 28-9 run to end the half up 51-29.

A second half rally for the Spartans was to much to ask as injuries to Trinity Western's Carissa Roosma (elbow) and Janice Berends (dislocated shoulder) left the Spartans short handed late in the second half. In the end Simon Fraser proved too much for the Spartans as they pushed their lead up to 40 points to end the game with an 82-42 victory.

Jessica Kaczowka 27 points, 5 rebounds, and Teresa Kleindienst 25 points led the Clan. Alaina Thiessen 8 points and Heidi Frandrup 7 points, 4 assists led the Spartans.

TWU assistant Coach Kerby Court, speaking on behalf of head coach Rebecca Hays who was with her injured players, commented after the game, "We stayed with them for the first ten minutes, but then there depth and experience took over. We were not able to compete with them on the boards (SFU out rebounded the TWU 48-31) and in taking care of the basketball (SFU turnovers 11, TWU turnovers 25). But, that is why they are one of the top teams in the NAIA. Our girls worked really hard tonight, Coach Hays and I are proud of the effort that they put forth, they continue to improve every night. Fortunately we can put this game behind us quickly as we have to get ready for Dordt College tomorrow afternoon."

Trinity Western University's next home game is Tuesday December 21 against Dordt College from Sioux Center, Iowa. Game time at David E. Enarsen Gymnasium is 2:00 pm.
