Spartans Have Work Cut Out for Them

Langley, British Columbia - Having to face the #4 team in the country is a difficult task. Even with the home court advantage the Spartans were unable to stay with the University of Alberta on February 12. Losing their last two regular season games means the Trinity Western University women's basketball team will have a tough road to hoe come play-off time. Effort was not a problem for the Spartans even though they lost in a dominating 75-42 performance. Now the Spartans must regroup for their Canada West quarterfinal series on February 18-20.

The Spartans (3-17) started strong in the first couple minutes, but after being tied 6-6 they could not sustain their level of play. Alberta (15-5) jumped ahead quickly and was up 34-14 with just 6 minutes left in the first half. The Pandas held TWU to just 4 more points and took a 46-18 lead into halftime. TWU played strong in the second half and were only outscored by 4 points.

"If we can't get confidence from the second half than I don't know what we are going to get confidence from. The close play in the second was a direct result of us committing only 3 turnovers in the half, when we usually commit 15-20," noted Head Coach Rebecca Hays.

Cathy Butlin and Jackie Simon led Alberta with 16 points each. Rifka Heidleberg came off the bench to lead the Spartans with 7 points. "Rifka came in and stepped up," said Hays.

"What we need to do is to learn from our mistakes. We need to make adjustments and not continue to make the same mistakes," stated Hays.

The Spartans will have that opportunity when they travel to Alberta for Canada West play-off action. TWU and Alberta will compete in a best of 3 series, with the first game being on February 18. Game time is yet to be announced.
