Spartans Sink Mariners

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's basketball team kicked off the Capilano College Blues tournament with a 63-48 win over the Malaspina University College Mariners.

The Spartans had a slow start to the game and only led 29-22 at the half. In the second half TWU began to get comfortable and were able to exert defensive pressure on the Mariners. The strong second half allowed the Spartans to gain the 15-point victory over the Mariners.

"Our defensive intensity picked in the second half," said TWU coach Rebecca Hays. "This allowed us to get better looks and be able to relax and run things better."

Leading the way for the Spartans were forwards Trina Nelson (Lynden, WA) 14 points and Anna Chinnery (Abbotsford, BC) 12 points. Christie Bigelow (Lynden, WA) also had a strong game for the Spartans making three 3-point shots on her way to 11 points.

Next up for the Spartans
Saturday, October 7, 2000, game two at the Capilano Blues tournament against the University College of the Fraser Valley. Game time is 5:15 in North Vancouver.
