Bisons Run Away from Spartans

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's basketball team travelled to Winnipeg, MB to face the University of Manitoba Bisons in the 2000-2001 Canada West league opener. Unfortunately, for the Spartans they were no match for the powerful Bisons as Manitoba ran away with a 88-44 victory.

The Bisons jumped out to a 30-point lead at the half up 51-21. "We didn't have a very strong first half," said TWU Head Coach Rebecca Hays.

Trinity Western was more disciplined in the second half and held the Bisons to 34 points in the second period. "We managed to settle down in the second half," said Hays "By controlling the ball on offense and doing a much better job of rebounding, we cut down on their scoring opportunities."

Statistical leaders for the Bisons were Lara Asplin - 17 points, 13 rebounds and Anne Smith - 15 points, 3 rebounds.

Statistical leaders for the Spartans were Trina Nelson (Lynden, WA) - 9 points, 4 rebounds, Christie Bigelow (Lynden, WA) - 9 points, 5 rebounds and Heidi DeHaan (Lynden, WA) - 8 points, 6 rebounds.

Next up for the Spartans is Saturday, October 28 at the University of Manitoba Bisons.
