TWU Spartans (58) vs. the University of Winnipeg Wesmen (79)

Spartans Run Dry in Second Half

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's basketball was unable to sustain the momentum of a strong first half as they lost 79-56 to the University of Winnipeg Wesmen. The Spartans came out running and gunning against the Wesmen, who came into tonight's action ranked 7th in the CIAU. At the end of the first half the Wesmen held a slim 4 point lead, 39-35, over the Spartans.

"We played a strong game tonight. We were aggressive and took the game to Winnipeg," said TWU head coach Rebecca Hays. "Unfortunately, the fast pace caught up to us in the second half and fatigue limited our scoring opportunities."

The Spartans maintained a solid shooting percentage in the second half 40.0% but they had 17 fewer shot attempts (48-31) in the second half then in the first half. While the Spartans were struggling to find the basket, the Wesmen went from shooting 38.5% (15/39) in the first half to 56% (18/32) in the second half. The combination allowed the Wesmen to outscore the Spartans 40-23 in the second half.

The Spartans were led by Trina Nelson (3rd year, forward, Lynden, WA) 12 points, 10 rebounds, Kristen Swann (4th year, guard, Calgary, AB) 11 points and Christie Bigelow (3rd year, guard, Lynden,WA) 11 points.

The Wesmen were led by Erin Soroko (5th year, forward, Winnipeg, MB) 14 points, 10 rebounds and JoAnne Wells (1st year, forward, Bedford, NS) 13 points, 2 rebounds.

The two teams play again Saturday, November 18, 2000 at Trinity Western University. Game time is set for 8:00 PM.
