TWU Spartans (42) vs. the University of Winnipeg Wesmen (76)

Wesmen Sweep Weekend

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's basketball team was unable to contain the University of Winnipeg's Erin Soroko (5th year, forward, Winnipeg, MB) as her 21 points, 8 rebounds paced the Wesmen to a 76 - 42 victory over the Spartans, Saturday night.

The Spartans started out strong and were right with the Wesmen, down 20-18 with 7 minutes to go in the first half. But the Wesmen showed why they are the 7th ranked team in the as they raised their defensive intensity and forced the Spartans into difficult shots and turnovers. Winnipeg's stingy defense led to a 23-9 run as the Wesmen closed out the half up 43-27.

The second half was even tougher for the Spartans as they managed only 15 points on 24.1% shooting.

The Wesmen controlled the ball and the boards for most of the game, forcing the Spartans into 28 turnovers and out rebounding the Spartans 47-34.

"Your not going to win when you cannot take care of the ball and hit the open shots," said TWU head coach Rebecca Hays. "We stopped playing aggressive tonight and Winnipeg took advantage of our tentativeness."

Statistical leaders for the Wesmen were Soroko 21 points, 8 rebounds and Heather Thompson (2nd year, forward, Winnipeg, MB) 15 points and 6 rebounds.

The Spartans were led by Heidi DeHaan (1st year, guard, Lynden, WA) 16 points and Anna Chinnery (4th year, forward, Abbotsford, BC) 9 points, 6 rebounds.

Next up for the Spartans is Friday & Saturday November 24 & 25 when they will host the Brandon University Bobcats. Game time for both nights is 6:00 PM.
