TWU Spartans (70) vs. the Brandon University Bobcats (54)

That's More Like It

Langley, British Columbia - Saturday night the Trinity Western University women's basketball team got their first league win of the year with a 70-54 win over the Brandon University Bobcats.

After a tough loss Friday night the Spartans came out playing aggressive hard nose basketball. The Spartans won with a total team effort. Led by Anna Chinnery's (4th year, forward, Abbotsford, BC) 17 points the Spartans had 5 players in double digit scoring.

"We came out hard tonight and played much stronger and more aggressive on defense," said TWU head coach Rebecca Hays. "We knew that our defense was going to dictate the outcome of tonight's game and that allowed our offense to be more confident and calmer."

After a very cold shooting night last night the Spartans came out on fire tonight. They shot 50% from the field and 81.8% from the foul line to take a 37-31 lead at the end of the first half.

Brandon made a push to get into the game early in the second half, Margot Jestadt's (4th year, forward, Regina, SK) hit a field goal 1 minute into the second half to cut the Spartans lead to 4 points, 37-33.

Just as the Bobcats were starting to open the door for a comeback, Spartan Christie Bigelow (3rd year, guard, Lynden,WA) slammed it closed. In the space of 60 seconds Bigelow hit back to back 3 point shots to push the Spartans lead to 10 points, 43-33. "Big's hit some key shots early and kept us going in the second half," said Hays.

With 10 minutes to go Brandon had clawed their way back to within 5 points, 49-44. But the Spartans were not going to be denied tonight as they went on a 21-10 run to close out the game and their first league win of the season.

The win pushes the Spartans record to 1-9, while the Bobcats drop to 3-7.

The Spartans were led by Chinnery 17 points, 5 rebounds and Bigelow 13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists. The Bobcats were led by Ambur Hamilton (4th year, guard, Mission, BC) 16 points, 7 rebounds and Jestadt 15 points and 6 rebounds.

Next up for the Spartans is Friday, December 1 when they will host the Douglas College Royals in exhibition play. Game time at TWU is set for 6:00 PM.
