Hall Beats Buzzer in Barn Burner

Langley, British Columbia - With 2 seconds to go in the game Trinity Western University forward Katie Hall (2nd year, Abbotsford, BC) drove the lane and hit a runner as the buzzer sounded to give the Spartans a 62-60 win over the Langara College Falcons.

Wednesday night's women's exhibition basketball game between the Spartans and the 5th ranked (CCAA) Falcons was a close match from the opening tip off to the final buzzer. Neither team was able to generate much of a lead at any point in the game. With the biggest lead by either team being 6 points.

The Spartans built a 4 point lead, 47-43, midway though the second half after consecutive baskets by Rachael Blackmer (3rd year, guard, Lynden, WA), Trina Nelson (3rd year, forward, Lynden, WA) and Katie Hall. But the Falcons responded with a 13-5 run over the next 6 minutes to go up 56-52 with 3:42 to go in the game.

That's when the veterans stepped up for the Spartans. In the final 3:00 minutes Trinity Western's Katie Hall, Anna Chinnery (4th year, forward, Abbotsford, BC) and Trina Nelson combined for 10 points, and 6 offensive rebounds while only allowing the Falcons to score 4 points.

With 8 seconds to go in the game it looked like the game was headed to overtime. Up 60-59 Trina Nelson took a shot to beat the shot clock. On the ensuing rebound Nelson fouled Falcon forward Angela Miller (3rd year, F, Richmond, BC). Miller went to the other end to shoot two foul shots. Miller missed the first and made the second shot to tie the game.

After the made free throw Spartan point guard Rachael Blackmer took the inbound pass and sprinted the length of the floor. Blackmer found Hall open at the top of the 3 point line. Hall then drove the lane and hit the game winner over 3 Langara defenders.

"It was nice that our players stepped up in a hard part of the season. With finals right around the corner our players are physically, mentally and emotionally tired," said TWU coach Rebecca Hays. "We pushed through it though and it is a good way to go into the Christmas break."

The Spartans were led by Trina Nelson, 15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, Anna Chinnery 12 points, 12 rebounds and Rachael Blackmer 10 points, 7 assists, 2 steals. While the Falcons were led by Angela Miller 16 points, 11 rebounds, Chrissy Dumas ( 1st year, guard, Surrey, BC) 15 points and Melissa Bryan (2nd year, forward, Richmond, BC) 15 points, 9 rebounds.

The win improves the Spartans overall record to 8-12 while dropping the Falcons to 13-4.

Next up for the Spartans is Friday December 29, 2000 in Lewiston, ID against Lewis & Clark State. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
