TWU Spartans (65) vs. the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (74)

The Heart Was Willing...

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's basketball team played one of their best halves of the year on Saturday night. With only 8 players dressed the Spartans jumped out in front of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 42-32 after the first 20 minutes of play.

Unfortunately for the Spartans lack of an experienced and deep bench once again proved the difference as TWU ran out of gas for the second night in their 74-65 loss to the Huskies.

"What an effort. It was a fun game," said TWU coach Rebecca Hays. "Playing with the lead and in close games is a learning experience for us. Even though we lost we played a solid game and we took care of the basketball tonight."

Trinity Western led by as much as 20 points, 42-22 in the first half.

The Spartans battled through out the second half and with 6:30 remaining they still held a 7 point lead over the Huskies, 61-54. That's when lack of experience and the fatigue of long minutes in two straight games began to affect the Spartans. The Huskies went on a 20-4 run to close out the game and secure their 6th league win of the season.

"Our second half shooting percentage (35.5%) cost us the game, we just couldn't execute down the stretch," said Hays.

The Spartans were led by Trina Nelson (3rd yr, F, Lynden, WA) 19 points, 10 rebounds, Katie Hall (2nd yr, F, Abbotsford, BC) 14 points, 9 rebounds, and Anna Chinnery (4th yr, C, Abbotsford, BC) 11 points, 13 rebounds. The Huskies were led by Claire Dore (5th yr, G/F, Regina, SK) 18 points, 10 rebounds, 7 steals and Jasmine Weseen (4th yr, G, Lake Lenore, SK) 13 points.

The win moves the Huskies record to 6-6, while the loss drops the Spartans to 1-11 in Canada West league play.

Next weekend the Spartans travel across town to face the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Game time on Friday and Saturday, January 12 & 13 is set for 6:15PM.
