Langley, British Columbia - The UBC Thunderbirds scorched the twine in their 79-55 victory over the visiting Trinity Western University Spartans in Canada West women's basketball action Friday night.

The Thunderbirds came out on fire in the first half and shot a sizzling 78.3% from the field in the first half to take a 23 point lead, 45-22, at the end of twenty minutes. The Thunderbirds cooled of slightly in the second half: They only shot 63.6%.

"We had a solid game but the Thunderbirds were faster then us tonight," said TWU Head Coach Rebecca Hays. "We didn't shoot poorly [37%], but we gave up a lot of lay-ups to UBC tonight.

Statistical leaders for the Spartans were Trina Nelson (3rd yr, F, Lynden, WA) 15 points, 7 rebounds and Anna Chinnery (4th yr, F, Abbotsford, BC) 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists. Leading the way for the Thunderbirds were Carrie Watson 16 points (7/11), 3 steals and Jennifer Washburn 16 points (8/10).

The win moves the Thunderbirds to 7-6 while the loss drops the Spartans to 1-12

The two teams play again Saturday night at the University of British Columbia. Game time is set for 8:00 PM.
