TWU Spartans (67) at the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (69)

Oh So Close

Langley, British Columbia - The visiting Trinity Western University women's basketball team gave the # 8 ranked University of British Columbia Thunderbirds all they could handle in Saturday night's Canada West match up. The Spartans hung tough with the T-birds and just missed pulling off the major upset as UBC held on to win 69-67.

"We almost did it," said an excited TWU head coach Rebecca Hays. "All the things we have been working hard on are starting to pay off."

Led by Katie Hall's (2nd yr, F, Abbotsford, BC) 12 points and 10 rebounds the 1-13 Spartans pushed the 8-6 Thunderbirds for the entire 40 minutes.

At the end of 20 minutes UBC was up 32-31.

In the second half the Thunderbirds were unable to pull away from the pesky Spartans and with 2:00 minutes to go in the game were tied at 64-64.

The Thunderbirds finally got their break and put together back to back buckets (3-2) to go up 5 points 69-64 with less then 20 seconds to go. But the Spartans kept attacking and with: 07 seconds to go Heidi Frandrup (4th yr, F, Newport, WA) - 14 points, 4 rebounds, hit a 3 pointer to pull within 2 points, 69-67.

Unfortunately for the Spartans their smart second half defense came back to haunt them. TWU had only committed 5 fouls in the half and with 3 fouls to give, were unable to put the Thunderbirds on the foul line in order to get the basketball back. UBC ran out the clock on the Spartans to close out the game.

Heidi Frandrup 14 points, 4 rebounds, Katie Hall 12 points, 10 rebounds and Christie Bigelow (3rd yr, G, Lynden, WA) 12 points and 3 assists led the Spartans. Leading the way for the Thunderbirds were Sheila Townsend 25 points and Carrie Watson 17 points and 7 assists.

The Spartans now travel to the University of Regina to face the Cougars on January 19 and 20.
