Vic Moves On

Langley, British Columbia - Trinity Western University's Anna Chinnery's (4th yr, F, Abbotsford, BC) 18 points were not enough against the # 4 ranked University of Victoria. The Spartans were unable to overcome a 40-20 first half deficit as the fell 77-52 to the Vikes.

"Anna played with an aggressive intensity, she didn't think we were going to loose," said TWU head coach Rebecca Hays. "She carried us both nights, she went out and played hard and did her job well."

Led by Lindsay Anderson (3rd yr, G, Victoria, BC) - 21 points the Vikes jumped out to a 24-8 lead midway through the first half and never looked back.

Down 20 at the half the Spartans could have easily thrown in the towel in the second half, but they battled the Vikes through out the final 20 minutes. The Vikes took the second stanza, but only by 5 points, 37-32.

The Spartans out rebounded the Vikes 37-32, but were forced into 27 turnovers by the Victoria defense.

"We need to play with a consistent intensity in order to move forward in our program," said Hays.

Statistical leaders for Victoria were Lindsay Anderson - 21 points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals and Kim Johnson ( 5th yr, F, Salmon Arm, BC) - 21 points. Leading the way for the Spartans were Anna Chinnery - 18 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and Trina Nelson (3rd yr, F, Lynden, WA) - 8 points, 8 rebounds.

The win moves Victoria to 14-4, while the loss drops the Spartans to 1-17.

Next week the Spartans travel to Lethbridge, AB to face the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Game time is set for 6:30 on Friday and Saturday, February 2-3.
